At 17, she joined the Atlanta Ballet under the direction of Robert Barnett, a former soloist with New York City Ballet.  Rising to the rank of soloist, Marthavan performed a number of roles including “Lilac Fairy” in “Sleeping Beauty”, four little swans in “Swan Lake” and “Dew Drop” in Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”.  Marthavan continued her career with other prominent companies including the Pennsylvania Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and the Nurnberg Staats Oper in Germany.

In addition to her work during the normal academic year, Marthavan has taught the Young Dancers Summer Workshop (YDSW) program in Norwell and Newton and served as teacher and adjudicator for the City Dance program in Boston. Marthavan has also taught at a number of other well respected ballet schools, most notably the Atlanta School of Ballet, the International Ballet Rotaru and l’Academie Americaine de Danse á Paris (AADP). She is currently working on obtaining her certification from the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) in London.

Nan Cogswell Keating, Special Guest Teacher
NAN COGSWELL KEATING is a former member of the American Ballet Theatre Company and performed with them throughout Europe, Russia and the United States.  Her professional career also included appearances with the New York Opera Festival, TV’s Bell Telephone Hour, The Asmus Ballet Repertory Company and the New York Ballet Club’s Choreographers Guild.

She received her training at the American Ballet Theatre School where she was a scholarship student.  She attended the High School of Performing Arts, graduating with the highest awards in dance.  Her teachers were Valentina Pereyslavec, Anatole Vilzak, Ludmilla Shollar, Robert Joffrey, William Dollar, Edward Caton and Nina Popova.

In 1972, Ms. Keating founded the Children’s Ballet Workshop in the Boston Area and in 1982, the Children’s Repertory Ballet Company.  Her students can be found in many ballet companies throughout the United States and Europe.  Because of her own professional background and dance education, she encouraged her students to audition and participate in the most notable and illustrious dance programs and schools.  The Children’s Repertory Ballet Company was a direct outgrowth of CBW and its repertoire included ballets such as Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland and The Nutcracker.  All were performed in collaboration with the Plymouth Philharmonic and Hingham Civic Orchestras.  They also performed Paquita, Les Sylphides, The Skaters, Mother Goose, The Nightingale and others.
In 1993, Ms Keating merged the Children’s Ballet Workshop (with an enrollment of 400 students) with the Boston Ballet School where she became principal of the South Shore Studio.  She had begun her affiliation with Boston Ballet in 1987 when she became a principal teacher at Boston Ballet’s Children’s Summer Workshop located at Wheaton College.

Ms. Keating was featured in the Great American Teacher Series of DANCE Magazine in the March 1995 issue, received a Certificate of Recognition from the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts and contributed to It’s a Living Career News for Girls.  She collaborated with Steven Mitchell to make the video and CD Introduction to Ballet Classics

After relocating to Florida, Ms. Keating co-founded the Mount Dora School of Ballet.  She has since staged several ballets including Nutcracker excerpts for “Light Up Mount Dora”, a civic event in Mount Dora.  She was also on the faculty of Ballet Adriatico in Italy at the invitation of Anna Marie Holmes.  Ms. Keating continues to teach and coach in many schools throughout the United States.

Ms. Keating brings to the classroom true professionalism and an energetic approach to the Vaganova based curriculum, which she teaches.  She is noted for instilling in her students a positive attitude, musicality and the love and joy of dancing.
