Milton Academy & Le Lycée Georges Duby,
Aix en Provence
Lycée Georges Duby at Milton: April 11 to April 25
Milton in France : May 31 to June 22
You can be one of a group of Milton students who will spend three and a half weeks in France next June, accompanied by two Milton faculty members. This year's exchange will mark the 28th anniversary of Milton's French Exchange Program. Each Milton student is paired with a student from the Lycée Georges Duby, and during the group's stay in Aix, lives with that student's family, sharing French family life. During the day, classes are coupled with a program of cultural experiences and historical visits. When the group from the lycée comes to Milton, you will act as host to your exchange counterpart. The French students will stay two weeks in April, attend classes at Milton, and participate in various school activities. Boarding students are responsible for finding a host family for their French counterpart.
Our hope is that each student will bring back memories to cherish, new confidence in their understanding and mastery of French, and a newfound perspective on another culture.
The Lycée and Aix
The Lycée Georges Duby is situated in a suburb of Aix, and is reputed for its “section internationale” (an advanced academic track with an international focus). Aix, the town where Cézanne was born, is a charming artistic city reknown for its typical Provençal atmosphere, and a perfect place from which to discover Provence, with its rich natural, cultural and culinary attributes. We will explore some of the most attractive towns or villages in the South of France, including Avignon, Nîmes and Les Baux de Provence. Visit the Web site for The Lycée Georges Duby.
The Excursion to Annecy
Picturesque Annecy, a little town, located on the shores of the beautiful Lac D’Annecy, in the Alps region of Haute Savoie, is the ultimate place from which to experience the Alps in the summer months. We will enjoy the numerous activities offered by the lake, explore the town, take a boat trip on the lake and hike in the mountains.
Paris
No trip to France is complete without a moment to savor the romance of Paris. We will visit the major historical and cultural sites, like Notre Dame, La Tour Eiffel, Montmartre, Le Marais and Le Quartier Latin, as well as major museums like Le Louvre and Le Musée d'Orsay. We will also take a boat trip on the Seine, and there will be a day trip to the Château de Versailles.

"Before I left for the French Exchange 2003, I was really nervous. I didn't think that my French was good enough or that I would be able to communicate effectively while submersed in the French language. However, when I arrived in France, all my worries disappeared as I was overtaken by the French culture and was received so warmly by my French family. The French Exchange was the best experience of my life as I was able to explore the country and culture that I had grown to love in the classroom hands-on. I would highly recommend the French exchange to other students because it is a life-changing experience."

"Though I was apprehensive at first I am SO happy I went to France on the exchange. I had no idea how different another culture could be until I saw it with my own eyes. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had and I cannot believe that I ever doubted going. Also, you do not need to be really good at French to go, nor do you have to plan on studying French in the long run. The value of the French Exchange extends FAR beyond that!"

Frequently Asked Questions
How will I get around France?
Travel within France will be on the TGV high speed train.
What is the cost of the program?
The projected cost for 2004, subject to the ratification of the applicable air fare and the fluctuation of the dollar, is approximately $1700. Limited financial aid is available: please request it in writing to Mme Marie-Annick Schram at the time of application. In addition, boarders should expect to pay approximately $200 toward the cost of housing their counterpart in Milton.
Who is eligible to participate?
Students in classes III through I who are in their second year of French or beyond may apply. The personal qualities which are important for success in this program are adaptability (to a French family and a new environment) and curiosity. We are also seeking students who can help and support one another, who will participate with enthusiasm and energy in the activities of the group, and who like to enjoy trying what is new and unusual. While participants must be committed to improving their spoken French, the current level of proficiency in the language is not the major criterion for selection.
How do I apply?
Ask your French teacher for an application. Hand the completed application to Marie-Annick Schram (Ware 523) by December 3, 2003. Apply early. Decision letters will be sent in mid-December.

"I'm a homebody, incredibly American, and hate the stress of travel, yet the French Exchange has become one of the highlights of my time at Milton, so far. It was amazing to see the landmarks such as Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles; staying in youth hostels was an experience unlike any other, it was unreal; however, most importantly, I think, the friendships I cultivated on the French Exchange will stay with me until graduation and beyond. A few of the girls on the trip, whom I had never spoken to before, are now my best friends; and those that I did know, I only became closer to. Not to mention, my French has improved twice over. What more is there to think about? I definitely recommend the French Exchange."
