The Spanish Exchange

Take your Spanish to Spain and attend school in the heart of Madrid! During your month-long stay in the capital of Spain, you will be one of 14 students to participate in Milton Academy’s second longest-running exchange program.

The Spanish Exchange is a school-to-school program initiated in 1979. It runs jointly with Colegio El Pilar, a private school in Madrid. Our group travels with two faculty members to Spain at the beginning of June and welcomes the Spanish group to Milton Academy in September.

You will be paired with a student from El Pilar, and during the four weeks of your stay in Spain, you will live with your counterpart's family, sharing in all of their activities and attending school during the week. You will also visit many amazing historical and cultural sites in Madrid and surrounding areas. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve your Spanish and to experience the rich culture of Spain.

Since this is an exchange program, you will act as a host to your Spanish counterpart during the month of September. The Spanish student will live with your family, attend classes at Milton, and participate in school activities. If you are a boarder, however, you will be responsible for finding a host family for your Spanish guest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to participate?
Yes, if you are a student in class II or III and have completed at least two years of Spanish. You should be open to the differences in the Spanish culture and willing to adapt to the Spanish way of life. Please be aware that this program is not compatible with the Milton Mountain School, City School, or any other program which would preclude your full participation in both parts of the exchange (i.e. June and September).

When do I apply?
Applications are made available in October and are due at the beginning of December. Scroll up to download an application.

What happens to my Milton course work if I go?
As a participant in the Spanish Exchange, you will miss at most a few days at the end of the school year; however, you must be in good standing in all of your courses to be considered for the program and will be expected to communicate the departure date to your teachers. You will only be responsible for coursework up to the date of departure and will receive regular year grades. In addition, a report on your participation in the Exchange will be entered into your academic record.

What is the cost of the program?
The projected cost for 2012 is approximately $2,600. (Price may vary based on the cost of airfare.) Limited financial aid is available. You should budget about $400-500 for personal spending money.
