Integral with my life as teacher is my life as an artist. I find that one profession is constant fieldwork for the other. When teaching I use my insights gained from years of looking at art both past and present, as well as from studio work for creative new ways to help the students learn and understand the language of seeing visually. Each student’s ability to “ see/ observe” distinctly and imagine uniquely is my gauge for success as a teacher.
Common threads in all my work are the language of mark making, the passion for the process of making things, primarily paintings, and the quest to find spirit through matter. I have focused on nature and the urban landscape as a symbol for the convergence of ideas including mortality, regeneration, space, weight, weightlessness, space, architecture and weather.
