As an artist: I like to interpret high pressure situations, moments of crisis, high energy, and emotional intensity. I combine symbolic elements in sculpture, photography, and other media to pose the question: “What will happen next?” I am attracted by what is comically or tragically absurd and regard all quests as heroic.

As a teacher: I am most compelled by social issue art in which students explore concepts of personal and cultural identity. I believe that art is a powerful way for students to explore issues in their lives, to question what they perceive as right or wrong, and to make strong personal statements of conscience whether with a drawing, painting, or a sculpture.

gordanchase_image2As a member of AANEPS (Art Association of New England Preparatory Schools): I have organized many professional art events including “Art with a Social Conscience,’ a 25 school exhibition of art about identity, diversity, and justice, the New England Design Olympics showcasing the link between science and art, and contributed regularly to the human rights programs of Facing History and Ourselves.
