stark_magcoverI use different types of scientific glassware including flasks, cylinders, rods, optical glass and mirror in my current body of work. The telescope, eye and clock provide much of the imagery and conceptual underpinnings for my art. Glass is the primary material in my sculptures, photographs and video; light is its catalyst.

Learning how to manipulate materials into coherent forms of expression is a primary goal of my teaching. I want to help the student create a dialogue between self and material, between content and form. As Seonaid Robertson cites Robert Frost in her book “Rosegarden and Labyrinth”, a poet has nothing to think about but the subject and afterwards nothing to boast about but the form.

A native of Kansas City, Stark earned her Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Ceramics from the University of Kansas in 1979. Since moving to Milton, Massachusetts in 1980, she has shown her work through out the region including most recently at the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury MA and the Nielsen Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. Her fellowships include residencies at the Corning Museum of Glass, the Millay Colony and the Vermont Studio Center. Her last solo exhibition, “Accidental Vision” at the Boston Sculptors Gallery was cited as one of ten best gallery exhibitions of 2001 by the Boston Globe (Cate McQuaid, December 30, 2001).
