COLLEGE OFFICE
CLASS OF 2008 NEWSLETTER #16
į January 18, 2008į
* If you have been
accepted ED, you need to withdraw all other applications and notify each
college in writing.
* If you made any
changes to your college list and haven't told us, please email one of the
counselors or come by and talk to us ASAP.
* If you have applied
ED II to a college, please let Mrs. Lombard know ASAP.
* If you receive
postcards or emails informing you that something is missing from your
application folder, or if you are checking your application status online and
something is missing, DONÕT PANIC.
Most colleges will be filing materials through the entire month of
January. If you find that
materials are still missing a couple of weeks past the schoolÕs application
deadline, please let us know.
* A helpful website
for navigating financial aid applications is www.mefacounselor.org. Financial Aid applications,
requirements and deadlines vary from school to school; however, you will need
to complete the FAFSA (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/), and some schools
require the CSS/Profile (www.collegeboard.com) and/or their own
application.
* We do not
need Mid-Year Reports. We will
automatically send your grades to every college where you have an active
application.
* If you have made a
change to your class schedule since applying to a school, you need to notify
the colleges in writing.
* If you applied
early and were deferred, here is our advice:
If you were deferred in the early round, remember that you are
still very much in the game. Your
application will now become part of the regular pool.
What to do now?
The most important thing is to finish the first semester as strongly as
you can. The semester grades are
your last chance to make a strong academic statement; ideally you want to
improve on or match your junior year performance. Colleges will look closely at first semester grades in
making their decisions. We send first semester grades in mid-February to every
college where you have an active application.
You might also consider writing a follow-up letter to the
college where you were deferred.
The letter can act as an update.
You could mention any new awards, honors, responsibilities. You could discuss a semester paper or
project that really interested you.
You could also describe your senior project. This letter could also be the time where you reaffirm your
interest in the college; if it is still your first choice, you could say so. The college counselors would be happy
to work with you on the letter.
Usually, students write a follow-up letter and send it after the first
semester.
*
During this busy period, please check your email a couple of times per
day (especially before you go home at the end of the day). We will be scheduling on-campus interviews
for some colleges and will need to keep you updated. Also, colleges may call us
if anything is missing in your file, and we will notify you via email.
