SUMMER HOURS
REGULAR HOURS
Director: Missy Manzer
The primary mission of the William Coburn Cox Library is to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of the individual student and to enrich the educational environment of the School by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date resource center. Our goals are:
From 1929 until 1971 the Milton Academy Library was housed in Straus Library, the lovely Georgian structure on the north side of Centre Street. In a single school day in 1971, relays of students moved the entire library collection across the street to the newly completed Cox Library which was dedicated in honor of Mr. and Mrs. William Coburn Cox, friends and benefactors of Milton Academy. The three-story glass, concrete and brick building, designed by Shepley Bullfinch Richardson and Abbott and recently renovated by the same firm, provides a quiet academic environment for study, research and reflection for the entire Milton Academy community.
Number of volumes: 46,000 (open stacks). Number of periodicals: Approximately 180 subscriptions, including foreign language periodicals (not including those available only on periodical databases). Automated catalog: Can be accessed from terminals throughout the library and from Cox Library Electronic Resources page, both on and off campus. Electronic Resources: Encyclopedia Britannica, Book Catalogs of Milton Academy and Massachusetts libraries, and periodical databases providing full text access to articles in magazines, newspapers and journals. These databases include Proquest, Ethnic Newswatch, Lexis-Nexis Scholastic Universe, InfoTrac, Boston Globe and Electronic Library. Microform: Primary sources including the entire run of the New York Times since 1851. Several readers and reader/printers available. Film and music are in the library. Click here to search our catalog. Cox Library is a member of the Cooperative Library Association (CLA), a group of 30 independent schools in the Greater Boston area. The schools share a union list of periodicals and inter-library loan capability. Cox Library is also a member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Library System which provides access to interlibrary loan, electronic resources and continuing education for librarians. This regional system is funded by the state.
Circulation Books may be checked out for three weeks, and may be renewed if no one is waiting for them. For the sake of others looking for books, please be sure to check out books so that the catalog accurately reflects what is on the shelf. The library does not charge fines for overdue books. However, if a book is lost, the borrower must pay a replacement fee. Faculty members often place books on reserve at the circulation desk for in library use only. Reference books, reserve materials and periodicals do not circulate. They must remain in the library at all times. Research Help Members of the Cox Library staff provide one-on-one personal help from 8:20 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday; Friday 8:20 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We encourage you to fill out a Help Sheet -- available from the person on duty -- when you need more help than we have been able to give you in a short time. State what you need and when you can return to discuss your research needs. We also encourage you to make an appointment to discuss your project with a librarian. Be prepared to discuss: 1. What is the project you are working on?
Teachers and librarians teach students how to use the library as they work on assignments such as history term papers and science projects. Teachers, please call, email, or stop by to discuss how the library staff can help you and your students with research projects. Students, please call, email or stop by to discuss any aspect of library use. Borrowing materials from other libraries (ILL) If you need books or articles that you cannot find at Cox Library, ask the person on duty for help in finding these materials at other libraries. Day students and faculty can check the catalog of their local public library and put a hold on a book with the bar code on the back of their public library card. Boarding students are eligible to get a public library card from
the Milton Public Library, which is a one block walk from Cox Library.
They can then request books be sent to that library. With the Milton
Public Library card boarders may obtain a BPL (Boston Public Library)
card. Cox Library sponsors a book fair every May. Students may purchase required summer reading books as well as books for leisure reading.
