I
come from a long line of educators (everything from college
to high school to kindergarten to Sunday school to the Alexander
Technique), and have spent a significant portion of my life
on college campuses. In high school, determined to carve a
path different from that of my ancestors, I decided to become
a psychologist.
Imagine my surprise, then, when as a senior
psychology major at Wellesley College exploring graduate school,
all of the most appealing programs were at schools of education.
I returned to the Philadelphia area (where I had attended
public high school) to earn an MS.Ed. in the Psychology in
Education program from the University of Pennsylvania, and
also embarked on what would become a life’s passion:
helping students clarify and pursue their goals. Since then
I have taught in public and private schools (including one
founded by a Milton alumna), consulted with schools and community
organizations, lived in residence (with the ABC program and
at Wellesley College), counseled high school students about
college selection, and counseled college students about career
selection.
In the midst of all of this, I married I’man,
an art teacher, and we now have an eight-year old son, Yusuf,
who has already shown signs of carrying on the “family
business.” Down time for me includes spending time with
family and friends, traveling, cooking, reading, and walking.
I’ve also just become obsessed with Sudoku.
Ultimately, it’s been enormously rewarding
following a different version of the family path, and I am
thrilled to be at Milton for the next stage of the journey.
