Science Summer Opportunities

Draper Laboratory High School Summer Internship

The Draper Laboratory High School Summer Internship program is soliciting applications from high school sophomores and juniors that are interested in participating in an 6–8 week paid summer research internship. The internship provides an opportunity for students to work with mentor scientists on a research project in one of Draper’s engineering disciplines while obtaining professional experience in support of academic preparation for a career in engineering or related science.

More information about Draper Laboratory can be found online at www.draper.com. Note that completed applications must be received at the Lab no later than Monday, May 21, 2012.

SummerLab at the Boston University School of Medicine

A one-week biotechnology program for students interested in any science field, SummerLab is a chance to learn lab techniques in a hands-on, inquiry based environment.

BU’s CityLab Biotechnology SummerLab provides students with a deeper understanding of basic techniques and concepts related to DNA science. Students assume the role of a biotechnology company and work together in teams to design and carry out an investigation to solve problems in biotechnology.

SummerLab is open to students entering Grade 10 through Grade 12 and rising college freshmen.

Project SMART

Students interested in biotechnology, chemistry: the science of molecules, marine and environmental science and space science should explore Project SMART at the University of New Hampshire.

The TOPS Physics Workshop

The TOPS Physics Workshop is a two-week program for high school students interested in science who are currently freshmen and sophomores. Participants will explore the physics of heat, energy, and light through hands-on activities and lessons taught by undergraduate physics students. They will also learn about research in the CUA and see how elementary principles of physics are manifested in frontier research. This program is offered free-ofcharge and will take place at the Center for Ultracold Atoms at MIT in Cambridge. The TOPS Physics Workshop is a program within the Teaching Opportunities in Physical Science (TOPS) program for undergraduate physics and engineering majors.

Northeastern University's Young Scholar Program (YSP)

For current Grade 10 and Grade 11 students

The Center for STEM Education at Northeastern University would like to share with you some exciting summer research opportunities available to both teachers and students at Northeastern University this summer!

The Young Scholars Program (YSP) is an intensive six-week summer research program at Northeastern University that offers future scientists and engineers a unique opportunity for hands-on experience while still in high school. Students work in active research laboratories alongside faculty and graduate students from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. Through seminar series, weekly field excursions, career counseling, homeroom presentations, and access to university facilities, students explore potential STEM careers and get a real taste for college life. The program is open to Boston area applicants who have completed either their sophomore or junior year in high school. It is a highly selective program, in which hundreds apply and less than 30 are accepted each year.

The deadline for submission is March 30, 2012.

MIT's Ocean Engineering Experience (OEX)

Ocean Engineering Experience Applications Due: March 23, 2012
July 29 - August 5, 2012

For current Grade 10 and Grade 11 students

MIT Sea Grant College Program is now accepting applications for the Ocean Engineering Experience for Summer 2012. The Ocean Engineering Experience (OEX) summer academic program is a weeklong opportunity for students entering 11th and 12th grade. The hands-on, residential camp at MIT will introduce the field of ocean engineering as applied specifically to marine vehicles and structures. Students will be submerged into a real world scientific problem that takes teamwork, science and engineering to solve.
