Milton's Mustangs continue to thrive in 2010 and prove to be a competitive force in the Independent School League (ISL).
"The program's success is attributed to the dedication of its players and coaches, on and off the field," says Head Coach Sue Landau. "The team recognizes the importance of adequate preparation, both physical and mental, for each and every game."
The field hockey program is supported by a fitness curriculum that includes a strength and conditioning regimen led by the School’s athletic trainer, Steve Darling. To prepare them mentally to play to their potential, players review game footage, participate in team activities, and take trips to see college games as part of their in-season training routine.
"Milton's field hockey team has a reputation for being one of the closest-knit teams on campus," says Captain Katy Bean. "The squad has many traditions that have been in place for years, including team dinners on Friday nights, dressing up on game days, and sharing a favorite inspirational quote before each game. The field hockey team unity not only contributes to success on the field, but it also inevitably helps to establish lasting friendships."
This year, the Mustangs traveled to Disney’s Wide World of Sports for pre-season training and played in a Labor Day field hockey tournament. The trip provided a great opportunity for team bonding, with a nice mix of tournament play and fun at Disney’s major theme and water parks. "We took full advantage and had an amazing time exhausting ourselves," says Coach Amy Hickey. "On the field, we were successful facing some talented and skilled competition. This unique opportunity to play before our regular season competition helped our squad prepare to play in the ISL. The team is highly motivated to reach the top of the league, and is looking forward to a successful 2010 season."
Former players have gone on to play at some of the top division I, II and III schools. In the past five years, Milton players have played at Middlebury College, Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University, Yale University and Georgetown University. One of Milton's former athletes played for Bowdoin College—a team that earned the titie of Division III National Champions for two years—and was awarded player of the year for the NESCAC league.
