The Boys Varsity tennis team opened the 2009 season with an impressive 15 - 0 victory over Rivers. Winning all three sets that they played were; Andrew Lebovitz (1st double, 1st singles), Noah Bragg (2nd doubles, 2nd singles), Will Hunnewell (1st doubles, 3rd singles), Josh Cohen (3rd doubles, 6th singles) and freshman Matthew Lebovitz who paired with Noah to post an 8 - 4 victory in doubles and then won his 4th singles match by a score of 6 - 0, 6 - 3 to record his first 3 points as a Milton tennis player. Also contributing to the victory were Anthony Blake who swept his 5th singles opponent 6 - 0, 6 - 0, and David Bruce who teamed with Josh for a comfortable 8 - 3 victory. Our next match is against St. George's at home on Wednesday.

4/25 @ Lawrence 1:00 W 15 - 0
The Boys Varsity tennis team began the second half of their ISL season with a workmanlike 15 - 0 victory over Lawrence Academy. Noah, Andrew, and Matts managed to win all three of their sets (2singles & 1 doubles) without dropping a single game! Will won his singles sets by scores of 6 - 2, 6 - 1, and teamed with Andrew for an 8 - 0 bagel at 1st doubles. Anthony and Josh both weathered minor health concerns to record straight set victories at 5th and 6th singles respectively. Once again David and Ben had to come from behind to score an 8 - 6 win at 3rd doubles. We are now 8 - 0 and travel to Roxbury Latin on Wednesday.
4/29 @ Roxbury Latin 3:30 W 9 - 6
In their closest match of the season, the Boys Varsity tennis team, led by the brothers Levovitz, defeated Roxbury Latin by a score of 9 - 6. Andrew teamed with Will for an 8 - 5 victory at 1st doubles and then won his 2nd singles match 6 - 1, 6 - 3. Matts combined with Noah to post an 8 - 1 score at 2nd doubles and followed that up with a dominant double bagel win at 4th singles. The other three sets were won by Noah, Will, and Josh who each split their singles sets. We are now 9 - 0 and face a tough Andover team here on Friday in an independent match with seeding implications for the upcoming New England Tournament.
5/1Andover 4:45 W 4 - 2
In a match-up of two of the better boys tennis teams in New England, your Mustangs defeated Phillips Andover by a score of 4 - 2. Using the New England Championships format, we were able to take the doubles point as Noah and Matts posted a dominant 8 - 1 score at 2nd and then Andrew and Will clinched the point with an equally impressive 8 - 3 victory at 1st over a previously undefeated doubles team! Next came the best of three sets singles matches. Matts was the first to finish earning the 4th singles point with a comfortable 6 - 3, 6 - 4 win. We then garnered the 5th singles point as Josh stepped up and played great tennis for a 6 - 4, 6 - 2 triumph. Needing only one more point to secure victory it was Andrew who came through by a score of 6 - 3, 6 - 3 at 2nd singles. Will was up a break in his third set and certainly would have emerged victorious had we needed him to finish. This win improved our overall record to 10 - 0. We have another ISL match tomorrow at home against Governor's Academy.
5/2Governor's 3:00 W 14 - 1
The Boys Varsity tennis team avoided the common post big win letdown and defeated Governor's by a score of 14 - 1. Noah, Andrew, Will, and Matts once again each recorded three points sweeping their doubles and singles sets comfortably. Josh played another very solid match for a 6 -1, 6 - 1 victory at 5th singles. Ben Lin, seeing his first singles action of the season, split sets at 6th to record one point. The final point was earned by our new 3rd doubles team of David Bruce and Pun Sarapola who recorded an 8 - 3 win. This was Pun's first varsity match at Milton after being called up from the JV squad and he played well. We are 10 - 0 in the ISL and 11 - 0 overall and next play a home match against Phillips Exeter on Wednesday.
5/6Exeter 3:30 W 7 - 0
The Boys Varsity tennis team raised its overall record to 12 - 0 (10 - 0 in the I.S.L.) with a decisive 7 - 0 victory over Exeter on our indoor courts. Using the New England format once again, we were able to take the doubles point by sweeping all three pro-sets by scores of 8 -2, 8 - 5, and 8 - 2. Next came the two out of three set singles matches where Andrew (6 - 0, 6 - 0) and Matts (6 - 1, 6 - 0) finished off their opponents quickly to record two more points for the Mustangs. The match was clinched when Noah wrapped up his 1st singles match by 6 - 1, 6 - 2 scores. Next to finish was Will who refocused late in the second set to complete a straight set win at 3rd singles (6 - 2, 7 - 5). Since the match was already decided, the 5th and 6th singles matches were shortened. At 6th singles, Josh emerged victorious over a hard hitter by playing consistent tennis earning an 8 - 2 win. In the closest match of the day, Anthony was able to steady himself enough to pull out a tie-breaker at 5th singles. We next play at St. Mark's on Saturday.
5/9 @ St. Mark's @ Fay School 1:00 W 14 - 1
The Boys Varsity tennis team had another solid effort against St. Mark's on Saturday recording a 14 - 1 victory to up its I.S.L. record to 11 - 0. Our 1st through 3rd players (Noah, Andrew, and Will) each put in dominating performances winning all three sets they played while dropping a total of five games between them in the eight sets that they played. Josh also had a fine performance at 5th singles scoring a 6 - 1, 6 - 1 victory. The last two singles players (Matts at 4th and Anthony at 6th) had to work a bit harder but each emerged with a straight set win to increase our final tally. We next travel to St. Paul's on Wednesday.
5/13 @ St. Paul's 3:15 W 13 - 2
The Boys Varsity tennis team shook off the effects of a long bus ride to record an impressive 13 - 2 victory over St. Paul's yesterday. The day began with the now familiar consistent success of 1st and 2nd doubles where Andrew and Will bageled their opponents and Noah and Matts surrendered only one game to theirs. David and Josh fought hard at 3rd but came up just short in a tie-breaker. We then proceeded to win 11 of the 12 singles sets with the only blemish being at 5th where Josh had a bit of a "hang-over" from the disappointing finish to the doubles. To his credit, he fought back to win the second set comfortably. Anthony played solid, consistent tennis resulting in a 6 - 2, 6 - 3 victory. The win raised our I.S.L. record to 12 - 0 and our overall mark to 14 - 0. We go back at it today at home against B.B.N. at 4:45 p.m.
5/14BB&N 4:45 W 11 - 3
The Boys Varsity tennis team continued to build momentum towards this weekend's New England Championships with a second consecutive double digit win against a quality opponent. The 11 - 3 win against B.B.N. was led once again by our 1st - 4th players (Noah, Andrew, Will, & Matts) who followed up their 10 for 10 set wins against St. Paul's with a 9 for 10 yesterday. Also putting in their best performance thus far were David and Josh at 3rd doubles who hit their way to an impressive 8 - 3 victory. Josh also came back to win a thrilling super-tiebreaker to split his sets at 5th singles. In the longest match of the day, Anthony battled all the way to a tiebreaker in his shortened 6th singles match but fell by a score 8 - 9 (4-7). As the #1 seed, we will play Groton in the Quarterfinals of the New England Tournament on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Andover.
5/16 @ New Englands
The Boys Varsity tennis team traveled to Andover to compete in the Class "A" New England Championships on Saturday. Our quarterfinal match was against Groton and the boys played well recording a 4 - 0 victory. We won all three doubles matches by scores of 8 - 6, 8 - 0, and 8 - 3. This gave us the doubles point. Next came the best of three set singles matches where Andrew at 2nd, Will at 3rd, and Matts at 4th, each dispatched their opponents in quick fashion to clinch the match. Noah (1st singles) was up 6 - 1, 4 - 1, Josh (5th) lead 6 - 1, 5 - 1, and Anthony at 6th was ahead 6 - 2, 3 - 1 when play was halted by tournament rules. This victory advanced us to the semifinals to face the hosts Andover.

In the semifinals we faced an Andover team that we had played two weeks earlier. This turned out to be a fantastic match coming down to the final set in the final singles match. After splitting 2nd and 3rd doubles by scores of 8 - 6, and 3 - 8 respectively, the doubles point came down to the match at first. Due to an inability to consolidate consecutive service breaks in the middle of the match on our part, Andover was able to secure a late break of serve to win the match and the point. We would now have to win four of the six singles matches to advance to the Finals. The first to finish was Matts who earned our first point with a solid 6 - 1, 6 - 2 victory. Andover was able to secure the point at 1st when Noah sustained a slight hip injury which hindered his ability to move. We now trailed 2 - 1. Our captain, Will Hunnewell then stepped up and earned the 3rd singles point with a workmanlike 6 - 1, 6 - 4 win. That tied the match score at 2 points each. After Anthony put us ahead with a convincing 6 - 3, 6 - 0 win at 6th singles, Andover was able to tie the score at 3 when Josh fell in a very tight 5ht singles match 4 - 6, 4 - 6. It would all come down to the match at 2nd singles between Andrew Lebovitz and Mark Adamsson. After falling behind early in the first set, Andrew stormed back to tie the score but his opponent steadied himself enough to pull out the set. Andrew refocused and played great tennis to take the second set by a score of 6 - 1. The entire match would come down to the third set. After an extended break taken by the Andover player, they traded early breaks before Mark collapsed to the court with severe leg cramps. The trainer was called and Andover took an injury time-out. When the match continued, each player held serve twice to make the score 4 - 4. Battling recurring cramps, the Andover player secured a break of serve and then came back from a love -30 hole to hold serve at take the match. Andrew was visibly distraught after the physically and mentally draining match. I was extremely proud of the way that each and every one of our players competed all day! This match could not have been closer. In the final analysis, each team won a total of eight sets but Andover won the match due to the scoring system that is used in the New England Championships. We have two important I.S.L. matches remaining this week. We face Groton again at home on Wednesday and the travel to Nobles for the season finale on Friday.
5/20Groton 3:30 W 15 - 0
The Boys Varsity tennis team closed out the home portion of their season in fine fashion with a 15 - 0 victory over Groton. After sweeping the doubles matches by scores of 3 - 3 (retired), 8 - 2, and 8 - 4, we were also able to win all 12 sets of singles. Noah, Will, and Matts each won both of their sets without losing a single game! Andrew surrendered a total of three games in his sets and Josh gave up only four. Anthony had to battle at 6th but emerged with a 7 - 5, 6 - 4 victory to complete the sweep. We are now 14 - 0 in the I.S.L. and finish the season with a BIG MATCH at Nobles on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
5/22 @ Nobles 4:15 W
The Boys Varsity tennis team traveled to Nobles last Friday for a match with everything on the line. Each team was 14 - 0 in the I.S.L. The winner would not only have bragging rights in the rivalry but would also become the only remaining undefeated team and the undisputed League Champions! The match began with Milton taking two of the three doubles prosets with Noah and Matts completing their season long perfect run at second doubles with an 8 - 4 victory. Andrew and Will continued their solid play with an 8 - 5 win at first. David and Josh played well but fell 4 - 8 at third. With a 2 to 1 lead going into the singles sets, we needed to win 6 of them to clinch the match. After first set wins by Andrew, Will, and Matts our total was up to 5 leaving us 3 to go. When Nobles won first sets at 1st, 5th and 6th, the score tightened up to 5 - 4 in our favor. Noah came back after an injury time-out for treatment of his strained hip flexor to gut out a 6 - 2 victory in his second set at 1st singles. Our tally was up to 6. Next, Matts finished off his game opponent at 4th by a score of 6 - 4. With four second sets in progress we needed to win one more to take the match, the undefeated season, and the I.S.L. Championship. When Andrew fell just short in his second set the match score stood at 7 to 5 for Milton. Down a break late in his second set, Captain Will Hunnewell summoned his best tennis of the season and won four straight games to record a 6 - 4 victory and seal the win for the Mustangs. He was mobbed by his teammates in celebration of a hard-fought and well-deserved victory. With everything already decided, Josh and Anthony went through the motions to finish their now meaningless sets so that they could celebrate with the rest of the players, parents, siblings, coach and friends. This rousing victory finished off our undefeated 17 - 0 regular season which included a perfect 15 - 0 record in the Independent School League! The R.K. Irons I.S.L. Championship Trophy will be back where it belongs for another year.
