The 2005-2006 swimming season was a challenge for both the girl’s
and boy’s teams. Both the boys and girls lost several swimmers
to graduation after the 2004-2005 season. This seriously impacted
the depth of the team, making it very difficult to go head to head
with the perennial New England swimming powers. Consequently the
boy’s team ended the season with an overall 1 and 5 record.
The boys won many more events than the competition but lacked the
depth to prevail. The girl’s team also struggled against the
same teams and ended the season with a 0 and 7 record. In the ISL,
where the teams compete as a combined, coed team, the Milton swimmers
fared much better, finishing the season with a perfect 4 and 0 record,
winning the ISL championship for the fifteenth time. This was one
of the most prodigious seasons from a record-setting perspective,
the boys setting 5 new school records. This is most impressive when
you consider that they have yet to swim in the New England championship,
scheduled for the March 4th weekend. It is also likely that some
of the girl’s records could fall at this year’s championship.
Many
swimmers have improved significantly over the course of the season
and even though the team will be losing several of its top scorers,
namely James Fee, Christina Fish, and Franny Izzo, the future looks
promising. Alex Tin (III), Joo-Young Song (III), Robert St. Laurence
(II), Gabe Gerhenfeld (II), Robert Bailey (IV), and Anthony DeVito
(IV) will lead the way on the boys side, while Sarah Paige (II),
Alex Desaulniers (II), Alice Bator (II), Kelsey Creegan (IV), Maribel
Diaz (IV), and Kristen Sparanga (IV) will provide the foundation
for the girl’s team. Overall, the season was rewarding for
all. The swimmers were very supportive of their teammates, and everyone
experienced significant improvements in performance.
The Milton Academy Diving Program continues to grow and improve.
With Zoe Jick (Class I) and Christine Martin (Class II) returning,
the team added newcomers Dan Sullivan (Class II) and Chris Lamont
(Class II). Zoe, the heart and soul of the diving team, was able
to compile a 6 dive list for the first time in her career, and competed
officially in several meets, scoring valuable team points. Christine
led the team in points and total degree of difficulty. Unfortunately,
a back injury kept her from finishing the season, and missing out
on our two post season meets, Easterns in Philadelphia, and New
Englands at Exeter. Our first year divers, Chris and Dan, were hungry
to learn and compete. They mastered new dives at a blistering pace,
and were competing officially after only a month of practice. We
are counting on them to score big team points next year, and both
have a shot at competing at the post season level.
