An After School Program is available for children in kindergarten–grade 5. The program is in session every afternoon after regular school days from dismissal time until 5:45 p.m. Monday - Friday. The regular program provides a supportive, comfortable environment with a variety of organized activities, as well as a restful, independent time for books, games or homework. On occasion special enrichment programs are offered; mailings for these are sent home and they are also announced in the Thursday Bulletin. Students attending on Fridays need to bring their own lunches and beverage. Diane Hutchinson, program director, can be reached at 617-898-2513.
Kindergarten Extended Day Program
An Extended Day Program is available for kindergarten children on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from noon to 3:10 p.m. when school is in session. Children bring their own lunches. Milk and juice are provided. The program features a balanced schedule of activities. For further information and registration, contact Diane Hutchinson in the Junior Building at 617-898-2513. Note: Kindergarteners who need full-day coverage every day may want to sign up for Extended Day and After School Program.
Chess Club
Lower School students may participate in a Chess Program that runs from November to March. Both recreational and advanced levels are available, with each group meeting once a week after school for a lesson followed by intramural play. Advanced players may also choose to compete in outside tournaments. Spaces in the Chess Program are limited and will be offered first to those continuing from the previous year. For additional information, contact David Smith at 617-898-2920.
Homework Club
This year we will have a Homework Club available Monday through Thursday for Greenleaf Hall students who want quiet supervised study in the library. A snack will be provided as students have a great environment in which to buckle down and begin homework with access to an adult and to computers. Students who have completed homework will be able to read quietly. This program is under the auspices of After School. Students may attend the regular After School program when Homework Club ends at 4:30 p.m. or be picked up by a parent. Detailed information is available from Diane Hutchinson, director.
Ice Skating
The ice skating rink, beginning at the end of November, is open to Lower School families for free skating. (Check the Thursday Bulletin for times.) While there is an adult manager from the facilities department present at the rink, there is no adult supervision of and support for children at the rink during open hours. We regret that Lower School children use the rink only if they are under the on site supervision of a designated adult. For safety reasons, it is imperative that all rules regarding the use of the rink are followed: Hats must be worn at all times and hockey sticks and pucks are not allowed on the ice during free skating times.
Music Lessons
Private instruction is offered by regular members of the Academy music department in voice, piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, classical guitar, electric guitar and bass. A Lower School wind/brass ensemble and a string orchestra are available to students in grades 4-5 whose proficiency supports participation. Further information and a fee schedule are available in the Lower School offices. For additional information contact Dr. Donald Dregalla, Upper School Music Department, 617-898-2136. Lessons are scheduled outside the regular instructional day.
