Middle School

Middle school years involve tremendous growth and change. We see curiosity, boundless energy, and increased sophistication inside and outside the classroom. Each day, our students take on more responsibility and independence; we understand them, support them, and help them grow as they transition from childhood to adolescence.

Milton Academy helps students take safe risks, pursue talents, and discover new passions. Our vigorous academics focus on skill development, hands-on learning, and interdisciplinary projects. Connections between students and adults, so important in adolescent years, are lively—in the classroom, and on the fields and stages. Students feel comfortable turning to their teachers, advisors or coaches for support and guidance. Our weekly community meetings provide leadership opportunities, celebrate individual and group success, and cultivate respect and responsibility. Milton’s Middle School faculty are devoted to their craft and eagerly evaluate and apply best practices in adolescent education. As a School, we are committed to continuous curriculum renewal, so that our work meets the needs of and excites our students.

Middle school years should be wonderful for both students and parents. We’re eager to help you learn about how our Milton environment helps each student thrive.

What sets Milton apart?

  • Talented and motivated students at the threshold of their teenage years
  • Faculty teamwork, continually developing and refining the Middle School program so that it is fresh as well as strong in traditional areas of skill building
  • A vigorous curriculum: classes in English, math, world cultures, science, languages, visual arts, performing arts and music
  • Consistent one-on-one contact with faculty members in small classes
  • No grades, but rather detailed comments describe students’ intellectual and personal growth. Absent the typical labels or grades, Middle School students take intellectual risks in the classroom and learn from mistakes.
  • Experiences in responsibility, leadership, and service that promote intellectual and emotional growth
  • A faculty dedicated to teaching middle schoolers connects with students. The adults in students’ lives—teachers, advisors, activity sponsors and coaches—support them through their transitions.
  • A “360” program, co-taught by the Middle School counselor and learning specialist, which helps students learn about and discuss peer pressure, stress management, drug and alcohol awareness, learning styles and influences of the media
  • An athletic program that involves all students, managed by the Middle School athletic director
  • Rich opportunities in the arts, in and out of the classroom
  • A robust activities program that capitalizes on middle schoolers’ interests as well as connections with the Upper School
  • Interdisciplinary connections weave together strands of the curriculum in projects or culminating experiences. Students discover themes that relate across the disciplines.
  • Faculty take advantage of greater Boston resources, making use of nearby learning and cultural centers, local history and geography.
  • A learning space of their own where students build community, develop friendships, and celebrate accomplishments
  • A clear focus on the middle school years, with ready access to exciting Upper School facilities, experts and programs in academics, arts, athletics and co-curricular activities
