Jazz Artists Visit Campus this Spring

February 10, 2003

Noted jazz guitarist and composer, John Baboian, drummer, Thomas Taylor Jr., composer and percussionist, Ana Norgaard, and nationally known saxophonist and authority on jazz education, Jamey Aebersold, join the Milton community this spring as Melissa Dilworth Gold visiting artists.

Thomas Taylor Jr. is one of the most in-demand jazz drummers in the southeast. In 1991, Thomas started "In the Black" a jazz quartet with a talented young bassist, John Brown. Together, they have performed jazz across the United States and Japan. After graduation from UNC-Greensboro, Thomas taught at The Music Academy of North Carolina, formerly The Greensboro Music Academy. Thomas is part of the drumset faculty for The Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Camps where he teaches with many of the most well-know jazz musicians and jazz educators in the world. Thomas is also on the adjunct jazz faculty at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he teaches drumset and coaches jazz combos.

Ana Norgaard, a native of Venezuela, is the composer for the band, Flava Orchestra. Ana plays timbales, sets of two small, attached shallow drums that come from Cuba, shekere, guiro and campanas.

John Baboian has been on the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston since 1980. Although best known for his work in the jazz & swing idioms, John has performed in the classical, blues, rock, R&B, latin and ethnic music genres. His compositions and arrangements have been heard on television shows Walker, Texas Ranger, UPN's Seven Days, and HBO's The Soprano's. He has accompanied headliners Al Martino, Connie Francis, Frankie Avalon, Sergio Franchi, Bobby Rydell and many others.

Evening workshop & concert


Jamey is a nationally-known saxophonist and authority on jazz education and improvisation, and has developed a series of Aebersold Play-A-Longs -- book and recording sets (now numbering over 100 volumes) -- as well as other aids for the development of improvisational skills. Jamey was one of the first to encourage small group classes which concentrate on jazz improvisation, and he is the director of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. He currently teaches jazz improvisation at the University of Louisville.
