Esther Freeman 97, was one of
40 leading young Americans to be awarded a Marshall Scholarship
to study at a university in Britain next year.
Over a thousand young Americans have
been awarded Marshall Scholarships since the program's inception
in 1953. Financed by the British Government, the highly competitive
scholarships provide an opportunity for American students who have
demonstrated academic excellence to continue their studies for two
to three years at the British university of their choice. The Scholarships
are worth about $50,000 each.
A competitive skiier, Esther competed
in her first National Championships at the age of 12, and joined
the US Freestyle Ski Team at 15. She skied in World Cup competitions
throughout her college career at Dartmouth, and sailed for Dartmouth's
National Champion women's sailing team. Her interest in health in
developing countries was piqued with trips to Kenya and China and
work with the Mexico National Institute of Public Health in Cuernavaca,
Mexico. She will study at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine in preparation for a career in international public health.
