A mixed media installation by Helen Gamble 77, entitled "Houses"
will open in the Nesto Gallery on Friday, May 10. The exhibit will
run through May 31, 2002.
Helen's trio of waxed paper houses sewn together with dental floss,
floats above the floor, moving as one moves around them. They have
no doors or windows and light flows through, but the interiors remain
unrevealed. Helen uses a form that "evokes the clapboard houses
of New England because (she) grew up in these buildings. Compositionally
they are strong, practical, minimal and beautiful. Symbolically
they speak of tradition, isolation, shelter, family and status."
Helen hopes that "the poetry of this form in combination with
the fragility of the materials she used will lead viewers to re-examine
their assumptions about objects and ideas in our lives which, through
familiarity, have almost ceased to exist."
The Nesto will host an opening reception on Friday, May 10, 2002
from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Nesto Gallery is located in the lower level of the Science Building
on the campus of Milton Academy. Hours are weekdays from 8:30 to
