| January 2006 |
On
February 2, David Lindsay-Abaire '88 opens the doors to his new
play, Rabbit Hole, at the Biltmore Theatre in New York.
The play will mark the Broadway debut of David Lindsay-Abaire, who
has been represented at Manhattan Theatre Club with productions
of Fuddy Meers, Wonder of the World and Kimberly
Akimbo. Rabbit Hole, starring Cynthia Nixon and Tyne
Daly, is a bittersweet drama about finding hope in the lowest moments
of our lives, and the paths we take to return to the light of day.
Rabbit Hole marks David’s fourth play produced
by Manhattan Theatre Club. His first, Fuddy Meers premiered
in 1999, and transferred to The Minetta Lane Theatre for a commercial
run. It has since received over three hundred productions around
the country and abroad, including on London’s West End. Wonder
of the World was produced at MTC after premiering at the Woolly
Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C., where it was nominated for
a Helen Hayes Award as Outstanding New Play of the Year. Kimberly
Akimbo was commissioned and premiered by South Coast Rep, received
the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for playwriting, three Garland
Awards, and the Kesselring Prize, before it opened at Manhattan
Theatre Club in 2003.
David is also working the Broadway-bound musicals High Fidelity
and Shrek. In addition to his work in theater, David is
writing the screen adaptation of the novel Inkheart by
Cornelia Funke for Newline Features, as well as a screen adaptation
of his Kimberly Akimbo for Dreamworks.
When interviewed after the release of Fuddy Meers, David
cited Milton Academy as an influence in his career.
"I took Modern World Drama, where we read two plays a week,
starting at Aeschylus, going through August Wilson, then Mamet.
It was hardcore," said Lindsay-Abaire. "I got exposed
to this breadth of theater, this whole range. You had to pick a
playwright to emulate in exercises, and I chose Ionesco. Now John
Simon says I’m his 'true heir.' John Zilliax, thanks for that.
Also Kay Herzog, Rey Buono. Speech Team was the focus of my life
in theater. Dale DeLetis, Debbie Simon, and Randy McCutcheon led
the way there. I loved it: the camaraderie, the whole scene."
After graduating from Milton, David attended Sarah Lawrence College
and the Juilliard School and is a proud member of New Dramatists,
the Dramatists Guild, and the WGA.
