A Great Sports Weekend: Plenty of Cheers, Tears, Skill, Teamwork and Heart |
| February 2006 |
The
many, many Milton fans that packed the rink were thrilled with the
Milton boys’ varsity hockey team’s overtime tie (4–4)
this weekend against Nobles, this year’s ISL championship
team. The boys won the weekend for intense, non-stop play, from
the first Milton goal, scored in the first minute of play, through
the gripping five-minute, sudden death overtime. As one of the faculty
members emailed to the team: “Teamwork and heart were on brilliant
display throughout the game but most vividly at the end when there
wasn’t anything left to give and they kept on giving. Courageous
and inspirational are the words that come to my mind.” This
was the tenth season overtime for Milton — a season of unrelenting
spirit and concentration. Next year bodes well, when the varsity
will be joined by a number of the junior varsity players, who beat
Nobles this weekend, 6–3. The girls’ hockey teams plan
on a similar trajectory, as varsity lost and junior varsity won.
Other weekend highlights include the volleyball team that went to
the Eastern Independent League (EIL) tournament at Bancroft. The
girls came out of the weekend as finalists, geared up to compete
against the number one western Massachusetts team at the New Englands,
this Wednesday. Girls’ squash also had a terrific weekend,
coming in third in the New Englands. With plenty of help from their
young, Class IV teammates, the girls earned 96 points, 11 ahead
of their nearest rival. The boys' squash team competed in the Interscholastics
at Groton and finished 5th out of 36. Their overall ranking for
the year is 4th after Taft, Brunswick and Belmont Hill.
All
the Milton athletes are looking forward to hearing from Keith Caldwell
'02, speaker at the winter athletics dessert this Wednesday, March
1. Keith was drafted by Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids; he
will graduate from Brown this spring.
