A Weekend of Concerts

April 2006

The music department at Milton Academy presented the 2006 Spring Concerts in King Theatre on Friday, April 28 and Sunday, April 30.

Friday's concert featured the Milton Academy Glee Club and Chamber Singers. The chamber singers performed music of Monteverdi, Haydn and four movements of the Antonio Vivaldi, "Gloria." The glee club sang music of Hampton, Bernstein, Strouse and Carissimi. Members of the drum circle and the Grade 6 chorus joined the glee club on stage to perform the Caldwell/Ivory selection, "Hope for Resolution." The student vocalists performed under the direction of faculty members Edward Whalen and Louise Mundinger.

Sunday's concert (the 19th annual Jean McCawley concert) featured the Milton Academy Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. With Alice Tin (Class I) as violin soloist, the chamber orchestra opened with the Zigeunerweisen of Pablo de Sarasate. The chamber orchestra also performed the opening movement of the Beethoven First Piano Concerto with Simin Lee (Class I) as soloist. Following intermission, the orchestra opened with the finale from the Mozart Concerto for Two Pianos. The internationally-known pianist, Claude Frank, honored us by playing as one of the soloists with his grandnephew, Eli Schwartz (Class I). The orchestra continued with music of Vaughan Williams, Saint-Georges, Tchaikovsky and Tilzer. The orchestra and chamber orchestra were directed by music department chair, Don Dregalla.
