Renowned Photographer Lauren Greenfield Visits Campus |
| November 2006 |
Documentary
photographer and photojournalist Lauren Greenfield, named by American
Photo Magazine as one of the top 25 photographers working today,
will be on campus November 29 through December 1 as this year’s
Melissa Dilworth Gold Visiting Artist. Ms. Greenfield was one of
only three females chosen by American
Photo Magazine, along with Mary Ellen Mark and Annie
Leibowitz. Ms. Greenfield is the creator of "Girl Culture"
and many related projects that deal with the influence of popular
culture on how we live. Her photography deals most specifically
with issues of gender identity, body image and eating disorders.
Her photographs have been published regularly in magazines including
the New York Times Magazine, Time, The New
Yorker, ELLE, and Harper's Bazaar.
Ms. Greenfield will speak with Class I and II and will visit many
classes over the three days, including affective education, art,
photography and film classes. She will also meet with student culture
groups during Thursday and Friday activities periods.
Her recent documentary film, THIN, delves into the lives
of four women struggling with anorexia and bulimia. THIN
was met with international acclaim and premiered at the 2006 Sundance
Film Festival. The documentary has won several awards, including
the Grierson Award for director of the best feature-length documentary
at the London Film Festival 2006 and the Grand Jury Prize at the
Independent Film Festival of Boston, the Newport International Film
Festival, and the Jackson Hole Film Festival. THIN is now
being shown on HBO.
A screening of THIN will take place in King Theatre on
Wednesday at 7 p.m. and will be open to adults only—faculty
and parents are welcome. Ms. Greenfield will be present to answer
questions after the viewing.
