On
Friday, April 23 students, faculty and invited guests filled every
corner of two levels of what will now be known as the Schwarz Student
Center. In a ceremony highlighted by remarks from the Center’s
architects, Robin Robertson, head of school and Fritz Hobbs, president
of the board of trustees, Marshall Schwarz, Class of 1954 and his
wife Rae Paige Schwarz formally gave the gift of the building to
co-head monitors Sophie Suberman and Tom Myers. Dr.
Robertson and Mr. Hobbs both described Mr. Schwarz’s vision,
leadership, and generosity, as he pursued the idea of providing
an innovative space at the heart of campus where students could
easily gather during the day and at night, and where the important
relationships that characterize the Milton experience could flourish.
Mr. Schwarz underscored the team effort that had made the building
a reality. “Building this building was a team effort, and
it's been an immense pleasure to be involved with this team.”
He also emphasized the great range of personalities that have always
characterized Milton students, and the lifelong power of Milton
friendships. "When I came to Milton, the reason I came was
the students,” Mr. Schwarz said. "We hope that this building
further develops a sense of unity, and always serves as a consolidator
of students' strengths and interests. This building will help us
to preserve excellence as a school." Mr. Schwarz urged the
students to get involved in opportunities to serve others, and to
understand the needs and hopes of others. "Getting involved
and helping others will make you a better person and a happier person,"
he said.
