Sarah Wehle, Interim Principal of the Upper School, joined the faculty of Milton Academy Girls’ School in 1977. A teacher of Latin and Greek, she holds the Sarah Storer Goodwin Chair in Teaching. Over the last 30 years, she has served in various capacities, among them are Dean of Studies, Department Head, Head Class Advisor for Girls (the precursor to Class Dean), a reader on admission committees, chair of the Spring Project Committee, representative to the Lower School Committee of the Trustees, member of the Faculty Committee, scheduler, and Dorm Parent – for the last six years in Forbes House. Two of her sons are Milton graduates (‘02,’06).
I believe it important to model those qualities and behaviors one hopes to foster in one’s children. Sometimes we adults cannot live up to our ideals or follow our own advice but, given the opportunity to meet new challenges, serve my community and take a risk, how could I hesitate? Milton affords remarkable opportunities for personal and intellectual growth to faculty as well as students. For me, serving as the Interim Principal for the Upper School is clearly such a chance and I am honored to have been entrusted with the position.

Opening days at Milton

Throughout September and October, Milton faculty and student leaders help new students get to know the “inside” Milton, and get to know each other. Orientation is not a day-long event; Milton believes that the steady trickle approach is more effective. Student leaders and adults in the community share everything students will want and need to know through several interesting gatherings. These are not typical orientation events; they are opportunities to begin the great connections that are characteristic of Milton.

What is an advisor?
An advisor is a faculty member who helps oversee and guide your child's overall experience at Milton, and serves as the main communication link between you and the School, on matters that relate to your child. Each faculty member typically advises six to eight students. Boarding students' advisors usually live in, or are closely associated with a student's house. Students in Classes IV - I often have the same advisor for all their Milton years.

What to expect from Milton to parents
Milton keeps in touch with parents in several ways, but not through frequent email messages. We use the Centre Connection and the Web site; and your children’s advisors speak directly from Milton to you about the life of the School and your child’s experience here.

Meet Kelly McQuighan
A new member of Milton’s science department, Kelly McQuighan, in a few short weeks, will begin teaching Chemistry and Class IV Physics. Originally from Washington, DC, Kelly attended a magnet school for math, science and computer science. Her original love was math, but she enjoyed her physics classes so much that she majored in physics and astronomy at Rice University. During her sophomore year at Rice, her interest in teaching emerged.

It’s hard to believe that September is right around the corner, but in a few short weeks our children will be back at school and we will be cheering them on as they grow and learn at Milton Academy. One way that you can participate in the Milton Academy experience is by becoming part of the Parents’ Association. We hope that you will join us.
What is the Milton Academy Parents’ Association?
Many schools have an association of parents; some are more active than others. At Milton, the Parents’ Association is dedicated to fostering greater communication, offering opportunities for parents to meet one another, providing special treats for our children, and supporting the efforts of faculty, staff and administration.
The Milton Academy Parents’ Association works for and with parents of both day students and boarding students in Classes I-IV. Our governing body – the Executive Board – is comprised of parents who have children who live on campus as well as those who commute to school each day. We cordially invite you to become involved with the group whether you live nearby or on another continent.
And there’s plenty to do! In September you will receive a letter in the mail that outlines our events for the year. In addition, when you are on campus in September to register your student, stop by the Parents’ Association welcome table to learn more about what we do and our plans for the upcoming year. Volunteering to help is a wonderful way to stay connected to Milton and work with fellow parents.
Contact us
If you’re reading this, you’ve already found one way to stay connected to Milton and to the Parents’ Association. This newsletter, Centre Connection, is published five times each year to help keep parents informed about what’s happening on campus. In addition, the Milton Academy Web site is a vital tool, updated daily, for parents who want to be “in the know.” Previews of special campus events in the arts, athletics, music, speech and other arenas are there alongside Milton news and daily calendar entries. The Parents’ Association page will keep you up to date on our calendar of events, volunteer opportunities and other news.
Whether you are a returning parent or new to Milton, we welcome you to be a part of life at Milton through the Parents’ Association. On behalf of the Executive Board and our many committed volunteer leaders, we invite your thoughts and your questions and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible when school begins in September.
