Centre Connection Vol I Issue 2 • October 2002

The Milton Academy Parents’ Association held its first meeting of the year on Thursday evening September 19 in Straus. Dr. Robertson spoke with parents at this successful meeting, and responded to their questions. The officers and committee heads of the Parents’ Association introduced themselves to the gathering and we enjoyed a delicious lasagna dinner prepared by the School’s food service.

This month we look forward to Parents’ Weekends – for Classes I-IV on October 18-19, and for Classes V and VI on October 25. Principal Hugh Silbaugh sent invitations to parents, and the schedules for both events are posted at the top of the opening page of the Web site’s "Parents" section.

On Friday, October 18, at 5:00 p.m. the Parents’ Association is providing light supper for Classes I-IV in the Fitzgibbons Convocation Center. Following supper, we invite everyone (parents, students, faculty and staff) to King Theatre in the Kellner Performing Arts Center to enjoy an hour with Loretta LaRoche, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Ms. LaRoche is a humorist with a positive and realistic attitude toward life, who assists people in learning how to relieve stress through laughter. She will help us to laugh about each other and, most importantly, to laugh at ourselves during those moments when we may take ourselves too seriously. Ms. LaRoche belongs to the Harvard-affiliated Mind/Body Medical Center of Boston and has spoken at NASA, IBM and Fidelity on how to manage stress in the workplace. She has presented one-hour specials on PBS and appeared on NBC, CBS and CNN. She will provide a memorable time for all.

We hope that you will enjoy this new on-campus format for the evening of Parents’ Weekend. The Parents’ Association planned this all-inclusive get-together so that parents can meet parents, and even better, be with their children and meet their children’s friends, something that doesn’t happen often enough, especially for boarding parents. Even grownups are sometimes reluctant to brave a crowd of unknown faces, and at this event, your son or daughter can make the introductions to friends and their parents. We hope that a light supper and an entertaining speaker, will provide a congenial, convenient and stress-free end to the day.

Parents’ Association events on Friday, October 18
5:00 p.m. Supper (Fitzgibbons Convocation Center)
6:10 p.m. Leave supper and go to Kellner
6:30 p.m. Laugh with Loretta LaRoche in King Theatre at Kellner

Please check out the new and updated links on the Parents’ Association (PA) page.

Several fall activities will help parents to get to know each other and learn more about what is going on at Milton. The Parents’ Association and the Milton Alumni Association, will welcome parents for Nobles Weekend, on the Milton Academy campus, Saturday, November 9.

Look for the tent and the Orange PA Banner on the table. We are also working on scheduling a class dinner for parents in each class, on campus, with members of the administration as our guests. We will let you know about the dates for these dinners as soon as possible, so that boarding parents who may want to attend can make plans. Keep an eye on the Parents’ Association Calendar

We look forward to meeting you on Parents’ Weekend for a light supper and laughter with Loretta LaRoche!

Warmest Regards,
Pamela Thorpe, Co-President, Day
