We hope you have been saving October 24 and 25, the dates
for Parents’ Weekend, and that you plan to spend as
much time as possible at school on one or both of those days.
Please come and share in your children’s school lives
by visiting classes, cheering on athletic teams, and meeting
advisors, teachers, and fellow parents.
As well as a full day of class visits, we have prepared several
special presentations on Friday afternoon and evening. At
3:00 p.m. in Straus Library, we’ll lead a discussion
about the realities of drug and alcohol use among adolescents.
Then at 4:00 p.m. Robin Robertson, Head of School, will speak
on the topic of “Going Forward” at Milton Academy.
The Parents’ Association hosts a light dinner at 5:30,
followed by a performance at 7:00 p.m. in Kellner: an evening
with comedian Jimmy Tingle.
Saturday morning, from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., will provide
further opportunities for you to meet with children’s
advisors and teachers, as well as to hear reports on various
programs offered at Milton. These sessions, organized by class,
are slated to run from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
We want to emphasize the importance of meeting with your child’s
advisor. Your conversation with the advisor will help him
or her at this early time in the year to play a more effective
role in your son or daughter’s life at school. Please
urge your son or daughter to make an advisor appointment for
you as soon as possible. If you are a parent of a boarding
student who is not advised by a member of the House staff,
you should also plan to see the House Head.
Many of you will also want to meet with teachers. Teachers
will be available until 5:30 on Friday and again on Saturday
morning should you wish to discuss your son or daughter’s
work in a particular course. Appointments can be made throughout
the day on Friday and on Saturday morning. Be sure to go to
the registration desk in Wigglesworth Hall on Saturday morning
to make appointments with teachers, rather than go directly
to teachers’ classrooms. Registering for these appointments
will help to alleviate confusion and to prevent long waits
for conferences.
Rod Skinner, Rachel Klein and Leya Tseng, college counselors,
have set aside a group meeting for parents of all Class I
students, from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. on Saturday; it will
be an open forum for parents to ask questions about the college
process. They are eager to see as many parents of distant
boarding students in Class I as possible. If you wish to make
a private appointment with one of them, please contact the
College Office directly at 617-898-2310.
We look forward to sharing the Milton experience with you.
See you on the 24th.
Sincerely,
Hugh Silbaugh
Principal of the Upper School
