New
faculty profiles, 2002-2003
Jessica Bond joins the Milton Academy faculty
as an English teacher. She received an A.B. from Harvard University
in 1992 and an M.A. from Middlebury College in 2001. Jessica
taught for the last three years at the Derryfield School in
Manchester, NH; before that she taught at The American School
in London and The Latin School of Chicago. Her first teaching
job was a teaching internship at the American International
School in Austria. Jessica lives in Boston.
Otis Bryant will be teaching History at Milton. He earned
a B.A. from Trinity College in 1990 and an M.A. from Howard
University in 1992. Otis taught for five years at the Central
Islip Senior High School in New York; before that he was an
Adjunct professor at Suffolk Community College. He has also
taught at the Philippa Schuyler School for the Gifted and
Talented in New York. Otis will be living in Wolcott House.
Mark Connolly comes to Milton to teach Spanish. Mark received
a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in 1997 and an M.A.
from Boston College Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in
May of 2002. He taught for two years at Boston College and
for two years before that at Saint Johns High School
in Shrewsbury, MA. Mark lives in Allston, MA.
Steven Darling joins the faculty as an Athletic Trainer and
Class IV Health teacher. He earned a B.S. from Northeastern
University in 1994. Last year, he was the Head Athletic Trainer
at Boston College High School and taught biology; before that,
he was the Head Athletic Trainer at Beaver Country Day school
and taught physical education. Steve lives in Quincy.
Heather Flewelling joins the faculty as a counselor. She received
a A.B. from Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges in 1988 and an M.S.W.
from the University of California at Berkeley in 1993. She
has worked for several years at Brown University as a Senior
Assistant Director. Prior to that, Heather was a school social
worker at Bella Vista and Crocker Highlands Elementary Schools
in California. She started her working career as Assistant
Director of Admissions at St. Pauls School. Heather
lives in Roslindale.
Elizabeth Gilbert comes to Milton to teach English. She earned
an A.B. from Princeton University in 2000. Last year, Elizabeth
student taught English at Princeton High School; before that,
she was a professor of English at Sorabol College in South
Korea. Elizabeth will be living on campus at Milton Academy.
Kerrie Hudson will be with us for a few weeks
as we start the year, teaching dance during Ms. Edwards
maternity leave. Ms. Hudson is a graduation of Florida State
University and has a strong background in performance and
choreography. She also teaches at The Artists Way Junior
Conservatory in Taunton.
Bryce Jones will teach history and serve
as assistant dean for residential life, with special responsibility
for new student programs. Bryce earned a B.A. in history from
Southern Methodist University and an M.A. in history from
Providence College. He joins us from the Stratton Mountain
School in Vermont, where he taught American history, 20th
century world history, economic theory and multi-cultural
studies courses.
Peter Kahn will be teaching math at Milton.
He received a B.S. from John Hopkins University in 1998. He
has taught at Blair Academy for the last four years, where
he coached soccer and served as a dormitory parent. Peter
lives in Brookline.
Anne Kaufman comes to Milton to teach mathematics. Anne graduated
from Milton in 1979 before earning an A.B. from Smith College
in 1992 and an M.A. from University of Montana in 1994. She
is expected to complete a doctoral degree at the University
of Maryland in August 2002. She has taught at the Universities
of Montana and Maryland, at American University and at the
Sidwell Friends and Holton-Arms Schools. Anne lives in Cambridge.
Constance McCashin joins us as an intern
in the counseling department of the Health Center. Constance
earned a B.A. from Manhattanville College, an M.A. in psychology
from Pepperdine University and a M.S.W. from Simmons College
Graduate School of Social Work. For the past year, Constance
has been teaching in the theatre department at Brandeis University
and will be working in their counseling center this fall.
Constance is the mother of
Marguerite, 05 and Dan 00. She lives in West Newton.
Anne McManus joins the Milton Academy faculty
as an English teacher. She graduated from Milton Academy in
1991 before receiving a B.A. from Colby College in 1995 and
an M.A. from the Bread Loaf School of English in 2000. She
taught English and history for three years at Berwick Academy;
before that, she taught at the Southfield School in Brookline
and the Westminster School, where she coached soccer, ice
hockey and lacrosse and served as a dormitory parent. Anne
lives in Milton.
Melissa Rubin comes to Milton as an assistant
in the Study Skills Center in the first semester. In the second
semester, she will act as Skills Center Coordinator during
Kathy Bureks sabbatical. Melissa is a graduate of Milton
Academy (Class of 1991). She went on to graduate from Princeton
with an A.B. in Romance Languages and Literature (Spanish)
and to earn an Ed.M. in Special Education from Boston University
School of Education. Melissa has worked for the last four
years as Director of Academic Support Services at the Applewild
School in Fitchburg.
James Saltman will join us in the second semester as a music
teacher and orchestra conductor. He earned a B.M. from the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1979 and an M.M.
from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1982. Jamie
is the director of Camp Encore, a summer music camp in Sweden,
Maine. He has worked during the school year as a conductor
for several Boston-area youth orchestras and as a freelance
music director for high school stage musicals. Jamie lives
in Brookline.
Rebecca Schorin joins Milton to teach English. She received
a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1975 and an M.S.
in Journalism from Northwestern University in 1976. Rebecca
has extensive experience as a writer and editor and editorial
consultant for publications as diverse as CIO Magazine and
Environment Midwest. She has taught English at the University
of Pittsburgh, lectured in journalism at the University of
Texas, and been an adjunct faculty member at Johnson State
College, Lebanon College, Community College of Vermont, and
Curry College. She taught English at Thayer Academy two years
ago. Rebecca is the mother of Jay Deshpande, 02. She
lives in Milton.
Jose Segarra will teach mathematics this year. Jose earned
his B.A. at the City University of New York and his Ed.M.
at the Harvard Graduate School of Education with a concentration
in Teaching and Curriculum Development in Science and Mathematics.
He is continuing to work toward his doctorate in the Learning
and Teaching department at Harvard. Jose has taught at the
City College of New York, the University of Massachusetts,
and El Puente Academy for Peace and Social Justice in Brooklyn,
among other positions. Jose lives on campus at Milton Academy.
Leya Tseng comes to us from several years as a dean and college
counselor at the Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood,
California. Leya has an A.B. from Duke University and an Ed.M.
from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She studied
abroad during college at the Beijing Teachers College
and Nanjing University. Early in her career, Leya worked as
an admissions officer at Duke University and as an admissions
intern at A Better Chance, Inc., in Boston. Leya will live
in Hallowell House.
Kimberly Walker will teach English at Milton this year. Kim
graduated from Bates College with a double major in English
and Womens Studies. She has taught, coached, and worked
in the dormitory for two years at St. Marks School.
Before that, Kim taught at the Sugar Bowl Academy in Norden,
California and worked in the summers at St. Pauls Schools
Advanced Studies Program. Kim will live in Boston.
Lucretia Wells has already begun her work as Dean of Students
at Milton Academy. Lukie graduated with a B.A. in English
from Boston University and earned an M.S. from Portland State
University. She taught English and was Director of Study Skills
at Groton for four years, then worked at Oregon Episcopal
School and George School as a teacher, learning specialist,
coach, and dorm parent. Lukie comes to us from a three-year
stint as dean of students at the Darrow School in New Lebanon,
New York. Lukie lives on campus with her husband, Jonathan.
Mark Whipple will join us in a variety of capacities, as teacher
of the Moving Image course in the Performing Arts department,
as technical consultant to the Performing and Visual Arts,
and as a supporter of faculty initiatives in the uses of technology
in their teaching. Mark earned his B.S.B.A. from Northeastern
and has done coursework at the Lynch School of Education of
Boston College, Emerson College (scenic and lighting design),
and Grahm Junior College (television production and sound
recording). Mark comes to us after a long career in the technical
support side of corporate work, and after a year as master
teacher and technology director for the Nativity School in
Boston.
