Tryouts: Getting involved this semester: what, when and where

Athletics
Practices for all sub-varsity teams begin on the first day of classes, September 9.
Classes V and VI will play on fourth level teams, and everyone who comes can expect to play the season.

Class IV students are expected and encouraged to play on third level teams. Third teams, again, include all those who wish to play. If a large number of athletes come out for a particular sport, Athletic Director Mike Kinnealey makes every effort to make two teams, with two coaches, at the third level. While a student who is proficient enough to play on a second or first level team (junior varsity or varsity respectively) may do so, Mike Kinnealey stresses the advantages of playing on third teams. At this level, in addition to teaching skills, coaches emphasize working collaboratively within the arena of play. In addition, students have a chance to meet classmates and play on an age-appropriate team.

Athletes in Classes III, II and I generally play on second and first teams (junior varsity and varsity). 1st team tryouts begin on September 3th and 2nd team tryouts begin on the September 9. The athletic form in the summer mailing presents the pre-season option. The cross country and football teams welcome all interested athletes, and will begin an excellent program of skills training and teamwork. Generally more students try out for teams such as soccer and field hockey than those teams can carry, so coaches will ultimately have to make cuts. In the past, when a junior varsity team has had an unusually large number of students trying out, Mike has been able to add a junior varsity B team, in order to accommodate more interscholastic team players.
