Tryouts: Getting involved this semester: what, when and where

Athletics
Practices for all sub-varsity teams begin on the first day of classes, Monday, September 8. Classes V and VI will play on fourth level teams, and everyone who comes can plan to play the season.

We expect and encourage Class IV students to play on third level teams. Third teams, again, include all those who wish to play. If a large number of athletes come out for a particular sport, Athletic Director Mike Kinnealey makes every effort to make two teams, with two coaches, at the third level. While a student who is proficient enough to play on a second or first level team (junior varsity or varsity respectively) may do so, Mike stresses the advantages of playing on third teams. At this level, in addition to teaching skills, coaches emphasize working collaboratively within the arena of play. In addition, students have a chance to meet classmates and play on an age-appropriate team.

Athletes in Classes III, II and I generally play on second and first teams (junior varsity and varsity). 1st team tryouts begin on September 2 at 9:00 a.m. in the Fitzgibbons Convocation Center (FCC). All coaches encourage students in Classes I-IV to attend preseason varsity tryouts if they want to play above the 3rd team level. The dorms will open for athletes on September 2. Move-in will take place mid-morning. Preseason varsity practices take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Tuesday September 2 and Wednesday September 3 varsity candidates will also be required to attend evening chalkboard sessions. Second team tryouts begin on the September 8. The athletic form in the summer mailing presents the pre-season option. Performing Arts

Music
Orchestra practices are scheduled within the academic day. Come to orchestra at the scheduled time and you are welcome to participate. As with the orchestra, the Glee Club is scheduled within the academic day; the Glee Club numbers over 100 students, and welcomes all who wish to participate. Auditions for the Chamber Singers, the Octet, and the Miltones occur in the spring.
