Milton Academy Fall
Sports Roundup
The
2004–2005 school year has already provided some exciting
moments on the athletic front. Milton’s girls’
varsity field hockey team has picked right up where it left
off last year by rolling to a 5-2 record and is now looking
to secure a post season birth for the second straight season.
In wins over Choate, BBN, Tabor and Harvard’s JV squad,
the girls were led by the midfield line of Lindsay McNamara
(Milton, MA), Maddie Macmillan (Milton, MA) and Claire Sheldon
(Milton, MA). Up front, Teresa Curtis (Hingham, MA) and Jackie
Flint (Cohasset, MA) have been offensive forces while senior
goalkeeper Liesl Kenney (Bethlehem, NH) has been a steady
backstop.
Boys’ football shot out to a 2-0 start
with wins over St. Sebastien’s and St. George’s.
In one of prep football’s marquee games, the team suffered
only their third league defeat in three years at Belmont Hill
to slide to a 2-1 record in the league. Trailing by seven
points with three minutes remaining, the Mustangs sat first
and ten at the Belmont Hill 15 yard line but failed to convert
in a dramatic finish. Senior captains Charlie Haydock (Newton,
MA) and Lawrence Duggan (Weston, MA) have been pivotal players
as has junior quarterback Dan Zaelskis (Marshfield, MA). After
this emotional defeat at Belmont Hill, the team gets ready
for their next game against traditional south shore rival
Thayer.
On the soccer front, the girls’ soccer
team continues to find its identity as they stand at 3-3 in
the ISL after a recent 4-0 throttling of St. Mark’s
on the road. Each game down the stretch poses a challenge
as the girls look to once again finish in the top half of
the league and compete for a post season birth. Senior forward
Natalie Young (Brookline, MA) has led the Mustangs up front,
while seniors Grace and Joyce Lam (Randolph, MA) have been
strong all over the field.
The boys’ soccer team struggled in
the early going and now stand at 2-5-1. The team looks to
build on the strong play of senior forward Zach Trudeau (Norwell,
MA) and senior goalkeeper Doug Sibor (Hingham, MA). They have
shown flashes of potential and are working hard to harness
a greater consistency in their play. They look forward to
a stronger second half.
In girls’ cross country, coach Rich
Buckner feels he has, “The strongest girl’s team
in six years in this current pack.” At this point they
have only fallen short to traditional powers St. Paul’s,
Groton and GDA. They have soundly defeated Pingree, Thayer,
Rivers, BBN, Tabor, Brooks and Middlesex among others and
stand at 7 – 3 overall. The lead runners have been junior
Laura Gottesdiener (Newton, MA) sophomore Grey Cusak (Wellesley,
MA), senior Ming Jung Lee (Hong Kong), senior Emma Sando (Milton,
MA), junior Jessalyn Gale (Dedham, MA) and junior Kristen
Leonard (Milton, MA). Laura Gottesdiener has been the outright
winner in three meets while Ming Jung Lee also placed first
overall in a recent race. The girls will get another chance
at GDA and St. Paul’s in the forthcoming ISL Championships.
The team is confident that Milton will compete for a top spot!
The boys’ cross country team is off
to a solid start in ISL competition. Under the leadership
of co-captains senior Seif-Eldeine Och (Shrewsbury, MA) and
senior Colin Flaherty (Hingham, MA), the team has gelled as
a unit and has posted an 8-4 record to date. The Mustangs
started the season on a high note with a quad-meet sweep of
Thayer Academy, BB&N and Rivers. Colin Flaherty won the
race with strong performances from Thomas Harvey (Dennysville,
ME), Mark Motejunas (Milton, MA) and Seif-eldeine Och. The
runners have gotten stronger and faster as the season unfolds
with eight personal records being set during a recent race
at Middlesex. Mark Motejunas won the race with Thomas Harvey
close on his heals. The team continues to train and race hard
with the goal of a top five finish at the ISL Championship
at the Groton School in mid-November.
