Pick your weapon: Stick, ball or boat?

Stand by the incoming traffic on a Monday morning and one
will find most students rolling through the Milton campus
with their speakers pulsating with the latest pop. However,
there is one young lady who may be seen pulling into the Athletic
and Convocation Center (ACC) lot weekday mornings with good
old 92.9 WBOS playing softly on the radio. Usually she has
a busy day planned and BOS represents a nice way to transition
into a hectic day at Milton Academy which often lasts beyond
dinner time. Once the trunk pops open it, the season will
dicate what sports equipment may accompany this student’s
standard book bag.
Folks, meet Milton Academy senior athletic sensation Martha
Pitt.
Following this spring, Martha will have played three seasons
of athletics for all four years of her Upper School career.
One can find her roaming the field hockey field in the fall,
the volleyball court of the ACC in the winter and out on Quincy
Bay as a sailor in the spring. She has enjoyed all of her
team experiences and the variety of people she has met participating
in such an array of sports.
“All of my team experiences have been terrific! I have
made so many friends and tucked away loads memories,”
Martha says. All of this takes much time but, Martha says,
“Going out on the field, court or water in the afternoon
has enabled me to clear my mind and stay physically fit which
helps to be a better student in the end. I have also had amazing
experiences such as winning the sailing National Championship
in 2002 and taking New Englands in volleyball in 2003 and
2004.”
Milton Athletic Director Marijke Alsbach coached Martha during
the championship volleyball runs: “Martha was our rock!
She is a hard working, reliable, team oriented individual
who was an integral part of the success of the team,”
Marijke says. “As the setter the ball would often run
through her hands, and we never had any doubt she would make
the right plays. Martha is the type of player who anybody
would want on their side.”
Martha has also had the opportunity to hone her leadership
abilities as she has served as co-captain of the girls’
field hockey and sailing teams. Most likely she will bring
her extensive academic, athletic and personal talents to Brown,
Boston College or Bowdoin next September. Martha plans to
focus on sailing as her sport of choice at the collegiate
level. This will be tough, she says. “I will miss my
teammates and the chance to run out on the fields in the fall
and head to the gym during the cold winter months.”
Martha has made massive contributions to Milton athletics
as a person and an athlete, and we are sure that this will
continue wherever she tunes her soft rock station in September.
