Graduation at Milton is a ceremony that carries years of traditions
and favorite rituals – formal and informal. For instance,
the Friday morning parade from house to house, picking up
seniors at each stop and then marching from east campus back
to Straus, is so important that last year’s graduates
marched in the pouring rain. The longstanding practice of
electing the student speakers has assured seniors that they
will, at their last Milton gathering, hear a voice of their
choosing. That alone differentiates a Milton graduation from
most others.
Where
will graduation ceremonies take place?
Graduation will be held on the lawn by the chapel on Friday,
June 4, at 10:00 a.m. If there is heavy rain, it will be held
in the Fitzgibbons Convocation Center.
What should seniors wear?
The traditional dress code will be in effect for the graduating
class: white dresses (or blouse and skirt) for the girls,
blue blazers, light trousers, white shirts and ties for the
boys, dress shoes for all.
What end-of-the-year events may families attend?
Families are invited to events on Thursday evening as well
as to graduation day on Friday, June 4. We are once again
planning a barbeque/picnic for the graduating students and
their parents on the evening of Thursday, June 3. We hope
that you will be able to attend this final gathering of the
class, parents and faculty before graduation.
How can I get photographs of my child receiving his/her
diploma?
Miltons tradition of awarding diplomas in random order
has made it difficult in the past for many parents to take
their own pictures. Because of this, we now arrange for a
professional photographer to take pictures of each graduating
senior. Proofs will be sent to you over the summer, at which
time you can decide whether or not to order copies. There
is no obligation to purchase.
Where should I park?
Parking for graduation is an ever present problem, but our
staff, with assistance from the Milton police, will be there
to direct you. The plan at the moment is for all parking to
be on the Upton Field and the Junior Building parking lot.
Access to those sites will be from Centre Street. Please do
not park on Randolph Avenue or on Centre Street; town of Milton
police have ticketed illegally parked cars in previous years.
If you have a member of your party who needs to be dropped
off close to the ceremony site or for whom handicapped access
is required, please be sure to indicate this to the Upper
School Office so that we can make the necessary arrangements.
Because of the picnic and the number of people who will be
on campus from Thursday afternoon on, Academy Road, which
runs in front of the Saltonstall Gym and West Campus dormitories,
will be closed from 5 p.m. on Thursday until about 1 p.m.
on Friday. Parents who wish to load belongings from dorm rooms
on the West Campus during these times should use the access
road behind the dormitories.
