Spring Sports Prospectus
Girls’ Tennis
First year Coach Sally Goldman is at the helm as the girls’
tennis team is ready and eager to continue their prep dominance
of the past 15 years. As the reigning New England Champions
they believe they have filled the small gaps caused by graduation.
BB&N still looks to be a formidable opponent and the team
is training hard for the upcoming match. Currently the girls
are 4-0 and have only lost four of sixty sets in these matches!
With senior Missy Greene (Milton, MA) and sophomore captain
Tori Aiello (Milton, MA) at one doubles, sophomores Sarah
Miller (Milton, MA) and Ali Apfel (Brookline, MA) at two and
junior Elizabeth Hostetter (Boston, MA) and sophomore Maggie
Bouscaren (Chestnut Hill, MA) at three, the girls should look
strong throughout the year and in the near future. This team,
blessed with youth and talent, should compete for both the
ISL and New England Championships.
Boys’ Tennis
Not to be outdone by the girls' team, the Milton boys are
mowing down opponents in the early going. Led by Coach Duseau
in his inaugural season, the boys are 4-0 in matches and a
blistering 60-0 in sets! Junior Charles Posner (Cambridge,
MA) and senior Jonathon Trott (Milton, MA) lead the hit parade.
New Junior Anton ‘Air Canada’ Kovic (Montreal,
QU) and returning junior Trevor Prophet (Nashua, NH) provide
further damage on the courts.
It appears that Thayer and BBN will be two
key matches in the way to another ISL Title. If the boy’s
stay focused and respect all opponents they may make another
run at the New England trophy.
Baseball
The Milton Academy varsity baseball team is ready and eager
to compete again for the ISL championship. They are following
in the footsteps of recent teams as they are off to a quick
3-0 start. The 2003 Milton nine won the league title and the
varsity teams in the 2000’s have finished around the
top of the league each season.
Senior captain Dan Zailskas (Marshfield,
MA) is a force on the mound, at the plate or in the hole at
shortstop. He will be the lead guy on the Mustang mound and
will be ably followed by junior Mike Matczak (Sewell, NJ)
and Tim Walsh (Milton, MA). Seniors Nate Anschuetz (W. Newton,
MA) and Andrew Tsanotelis (Milton, MA) are the mainstays in
the outfield. Junior Billy Donahue (Walpole, MA) will be the
backbone behind the plate and also add depth to the pitching
staff. Lyman Bullard (Needham, MA) and Andrew Koris (Brookline,
MA) are always threats to break open a game.
The challenge will be to bring the pitching,
the bats and the gloves together in each outing. Games versus
Belmont Hill, Roxbury Latin, Nobles and Thayer will be key
match-ups this spring.
Softball
Milton Softball is off to a promising start with a 4-3 win
over Rivers. The team has been led by senior captain Lora
Faye-Whelan (Brooklyn, NY) and junior Annie LaVigne (Milton,
MA). Junior catcher Caitlin O'Malley (Medfield, MA) is working
with a number of young pitchers including promising sophomore
young gun Izzy Gell-Levey (Key Biscayne, FL) and third baseman/pitcher
Chelsey Locarno (Boston, MA). This is a young Milton team
that will have to develop an all-around game to challenge
the league powers.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Mustangs are entering this season after losing only two
games over the past couple of seasons! This spring they are
off to a 2-1 start with tight wins over Brooks and St. George’s.
Leading the lax men will be a strong core of defensemen comprised
of captain Tony Blout (Lexington, MA), senior Mike Greenberg
(Hopkington, MA)and junior Chris D’India (Norwood, MA).
Senior Nate Danforth (Marblehead, MA) leads the way on the
offensive side with the help of a young group of offensively
talented middies and attacks. Sophomore Alex Day (Wrentham,
MA) is holding the fort in the nets after an impressive outing
on the road against Brooks.
Key match-ups vs. Middlesex, Thayer and Belmont
Hill are just around the corner.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The girls' lacrosse team is being led in the early going by
the 15 goals of sophomore Alyson Friedensohn (Milton, MA),
and 11 goals of junior Teresa Curtis (Milton, MA). Junior
Maggie Cochran (Dedham, MA) is the top defender while fellow
junior Julia Nissi (Duxbury, MA) has been an unselfish and
creative playmaker up front. Seniors Jackie Flint (Cohasset,
MA) and Stephanie Richards (Milton, MA) are providing solid
play and direction on the field. This group is working hard
to polish their game to challenge the powers of prep lacrosse.
Girls’ Track & Field
The 2006 Spring Track and Field program is off to a strong
start. They are enjoying the fine weather outdoors as the
spring season gets under way.
Senior captain Bailey Carroll (Natick, MA)
and senior Jessalyn Gale (Dedham, MA) are returning to defend
their Independent School Track Association (ISTA) and Class
A New England Prep School Track Association (NEPSTA) titles
in the pole vault. Look for senior Shellonda Anderson (Brooklyn,
NY) as she jumps at the all-time Milton record in the high
jump in her final track season and combines with senior captain
Aidan Hardy (Milton, MA), senior Annie Jean-Baptiste (Milton,
MA) and sophomore Elizabeth Bloom (Wellesley, MA) in the 4x100
meter relay.
Senior athletic sensation Laura Gottesdiener
(Newton, MA) looks strong as a 1,500 and 800 runner. Seniors
Rory Kennedy (Boston, MA), senior Stacey Harris (Milton, MA)
and freshman Jasmine Reid (Stoughton, MA) finished last spring
as the top three hurdlers in the ISTA and will be returning
to defend their positions in the league. Junior Alex Desaulniers
(Rockland, ME) will be a leading the female throwers in the
discus and is joined by senior Lara Yeo (Toronto, ON), junior
Aiyana Ryan (Hyde Park, MA), junior Lindsey Dono (Sharon,
MA), and freshman Christina Samedy (New York, NY) to round
out the throwing events.
Boys’ Track & Field
On the boys’ side the focus is on rebuilding. Senior
captain Jim Frantz (Needham, MA) is joined by senior Noah
Carson, junior Ivan Kozyryev (Kharkiv, Ukraine), and freshman
Robert Bailey to form the deepest distance crew the team has
seen in the last few years. Senior Luis Iraheta (Houston,
TX) and junior Bryan Mountain (Bryn Mawr, PA) are joined by
newcomers senior Winston Tuggle (Canton, MA) and freshman
Kyle Mountain (Bryn Mawr, PA) to form a solid core of quarter-milers
looking to be a potent force in the league this year.
In the field events senior Don Wang (Jamison,
PA) returns to defend his ISTA title in the javelin as he
throws for the league and the school record and junior Roshaun
Laforce (Cambridge, MA) returns in the high jump hoping to
top the six foot mark consistently this year.
Keep an eye on the vault as freshmen André
Lima (Jamaica Plain, MA), Alec Seymour, and junior Allan Jean-Baptiste
(Milton, MA) look to fill the record breaking shoes of graduated
John Lingos-Webb ’05. Newcomers freshmen Chris Cote
(Sugar Hill, NH) and Kyle Mountain will also be working with
Jean-Baptiste to fill the hole Lingos-Webb left in the 110
meter high and 300 meter intermediate hurdles.
Golf
Senior Claire Sheldon (Milton, MA) will wrap-up a six-year
Milton Academy golf career as the catalyst of this otherwise
youthful group. Claire is the defending Independent School
Girls' Golf Champion as well as the 2004 and 2005 Women’s
Club Champion at The Country Club in Brookline. Led by Coach
Jay Hackett, this Harvard bound golfer is set to cap off a
distinguished athletic and academic career at MIlton.
Juniors Brandon Nunn (Rochester, NY) and
John Nilan (Milton, MA) appear to have solid games and will
help this group battle for the Match Play Title as well as
the Kingsman Cup held at the end of May at the Blackstone
National Course in Blackstone, MA.
Sophomores Connell Driscoll (Milton, MA),
Leif Jacobsen (Milton, MA) and Elaine Lin (Menands, NY) will
all help in the scoring. Freshman John Ezekowitz (Boston,
MA) is ready to start to make a name for himself in ISL golf
circles.
Following a strong win against Nobles the
group is destined for some exciting golf over the next six
weeks.
Sailing
The Milton sailors have hit the Boston Harbor in all sorts
of weather this spring as they strive to finish as one of
the top local prep teams again this year. Last spring the
boat crews finished in the top three in the New England Tournament
to earn a trip to Nationals.
The promising 2006 team is led by senior
captains Max Stratouly (Boston, MA) and Jon Enright (Bristol,
RI). Enright and senior HyunJin Kim (Seoul, Korea) should
be found manning one of the top Milton boats. Sailing along
challenging them will be boats occupied by junior Ben Whitman
(Oldsmar, FL) and senior Christina Fish (Milton, MA) as well
as sophomore Massimo Soriano (NY, NY) and Max Stratouly.
They have a big race in mid-April with Tabor
which will indicate the capabilities of this group.
