2007 Commencement Address
Artist and Alumna Sarah Sze ’87

Sarah Sze, Milton Academy Class of 1987, will address the graduating
Class of 2007 at the commencement ceremony on June 8. Sarah is well
known in the United States and around the world as a compelling
contemporary artist. Her sculptures and installations are intricate
works that use objects of everyday life in expansive or even dizzying
relationship, making spaces come alive.
Sarah has explained that she begins each piece by “coming
to the site, seeing the nature of the building, who uses it, how
they use it, how the space works. In terms of sculptural properties,
I’m interested in instability. When you’re doing art
as your life’s work, your major ideas have to come from some
personal space and from reflecting upon your time.”

What happened over Spring Break

For many high school students, Spring Break means relaxation, rejuvenation
and time to lounge at the beach or by a pool. Milton students, however,
use this time to explore the world outside of their own and touch
the lives of those that need help.
Organized by Milton’s Community Service Program, 21 students,
faculty and parents traveled to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for Milton’s
second annual Community Service Break Trip. The group helped repair
several houses in various stages of recovery from the disaster wrought
by Hurricane Katrina. In one case, they laid the gravel driveway,
regraded the yard to avoid flooding, assembled a storage shed and
dug a long trench to house pipes that will connect the home with
town water. This work resulted in the house passing final inspection
so its owner could finally move back in; a highlight for the group
was meeting this owner who had returned from her temporary situation
in Alabama.

What a year it has been for the Milton Academy Parents’ Association.
The Parents' Association launched its first silent auction and raised
over $17,000. We are grateful to all the parents who organized,
contributed and bid during the auction. Special mention must be
made of Francine Koris, chairperson of the auction, and her webmaster,
Eileen Greenberg. Francine seamlessly ran the auction, and Eileen
smoothly managed the technical challenges of an online auction.
The Milton community showed its support for the Parents' Association
with generous donations. Thank you one and all.
The annual Faculty/Staff Brunch was held on the coldest day in February.
Chairperson Rita Rooney and her intrepid crew did a phenomenal job.
Faculty and staff were transported to a ‘tropical’ location
in Straus Library for delicious food and camaraderie. Many faculty
and staff members took home beautiful plants as gifts and some lucky
winners of the raffle won fantastic prizes such as restaurant gift
certificates, tickets to sporting events and plays, spa treatments,
an IPOD, jewelry and more. Parents, thank you for cooking up such
wonderful food and contributing so generously with money and gifts
to this event. The brunch is a very special opportunity we have
to thank the people who do so much for our children every day. It
is important to mention that the Parents' Association received many
heartfelt thank you notes from the faculty and staff.
Upcoming Events
Arts Night will be held on Friday, April 20, at 6 p.m. Parents will
have the opportunity to view the fantastic talents of the Milton
Academy student body.
Please join us for the spring Parents’ Association Book Group
that will be held on Tuesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. in the Straus
Trustees Room. The book we will discuss is The Love Wife
written by Gish Jen. We are excited and honored to have the discussion
led by Gish Jen, author and Milton parent. Spend your weekend reading
a great book and then come to discuss it with the author and other
Milton parents. R.S.V.P. to Lori Mahmud at lmahmud@comcast.net.
The Class III Dinner will be held on Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m.
Class III parents received an e-mail inviting them to this event.
Class dinners are a great way to meet other parents and hear an
interesting speaker, too.
On Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in Straus Library, the Parents’
Association will host the Closing Event with Head of School Robin
Robertson. Dr. Robertson leads a lively discussion, and question
and answer time with parents. Don’t miss this event.
The Class I Dinner will be held on June 2, Prom Night. Class I parents
will receive an e-mail invitation to this event. What a wonderful
opportunity to see the graduating seniors and fellow parents, and
begin to say goodbye to Milton Academy.
Finally, we extend a grateful thank you to the Parents' Association
board members whose sons and daughters will graduate this year.
Your contribution to the Parents’ Association will be sorely
missed. Thanks to Ayca Gazelle, president, Barbara Hawkins, treasurer,
Francine Koris, fundraising chair, and Patti Salem, Class I representative.
The Parents’ Association was able to accomplish so much thanks
to your hard work and dedication.

Spring time, the only pretty ring time…Milton
presents Shakespeare’s As You Like It
“After Hamlet, of course, this is one of my favorite
Shakespeare plays,” says Peter Parisi, performing arts faculty
member and director of the upcoming spring play, As You Like
It. For this year’s main stage spring performance, Peter
was looking for a medium to large cast in a comedy, and as he explains,
“As You Like It has fantastic lines, great characters,
and we’re lucky to have an incredible cast
with many students who are new to the Milton stage.”

Arts Night highlight:
Milton alums from the World
War II era connect with students as they shape a remarkable performance
Arts Night—an annual favorite—showcases Milton artists
of all types and levels of experience in venues all over campus.
Students love sharing their work with one another in music, dance,
drama, speech, painting, sculpture, creative writing and artistic
ventures of many kinds.
This year a unique event will unfold before the audience, a distillation
of interviews between 10 students in Advanced Oral Interpretation
and 33 Milton alumni, who answered students’ questions with
their stories about Milton during World War II years. “Milton
Generations: A World War II Oral History Project” will take
place at 6 p.m. on Arts Night, April 20, in King Theatre.

Dancing at Lughnasa

Milton’s traditional 1212 Productions take big stage drama
to an intimate, studio setting. This spring’s 1212 play, Dancing
at Lughnasa by Brian Friel, is set in the summer of 1936 in
Ballybeg, a fictional town of Ireland’s County Donegal. Narrated
by the character Michael, this memory play recounts a month of his
childhood spent at his aunts’ home with his mother and her
four older sisters. The events that shape that summer for Michael’s
family are the appearance of his Uncle Jack—a missionary returned
from Uganda—and his enchanting but irresponsible father, Gerry.
Directed by performing arts chair David Peck,
a small and seasoned cast of Milton students will perform the spring
1212 Production in Wigglesworth Hall on Thursday, May 3, and Friday,
May 4, at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m.
