Coaches' Corner

Girls' Tennis

The girls' tennis team is off to its typical strong start. There are six seniors contributing including Maggie Bouscaren, Ali Apfel, Maddy Hobbs, Megan Campos and captains Sarah Miller and Tori Aiello. Emily Roberts and Suzanne Gallo are Milton's two new juniors and they contribute greatly in matches and in practice with their performances and their team spirit. Miceala Connors is a returning sophomore who is much improved and Sophie Panarese is a freshman making a strong contribution. The team is closing in on the goal of winning the ISL for the third year in a row and will be working hard until the New England tournament. Important upcoming matches will be against Thayer and BB&N. The girls recently thumped Hotchkiss and will be looking for further redemption against Andover and Exeter.

Boys' Tennis

The boys are off to another impressive start as they rattled off five straight wins before falling to a hot Belmont Hill team. Senior Captain Michael Chao has led the team in the first singles spot followed admirably by Andrew Lebovitz, Will Hunnewell and Josh Cohen. Noah Bragg and Anthony Blake have led the way as a first doubles pair.

Girls' Lacrosse

The team is off to a decent start after a productive spring break trip to Disneyland in Florida. Senior goaltender Julie Hobbs has been solid in the nets while seniors Alyson Friedensohn and Hilary McNamara have been providing plenty of offense up front. New junior Alyson Mittleman has provided a spark while senior captain Alex Norodom has also been solid on the field.

Boys' Lacrosse

The boys are currently in the middle of the pack in the early going. All games have been tight as only the win over Brooks was more than a one goal margin. These games included an overtime loss and a last minute win over Middlesex.

Senior Alex Day has been the backbone in the nets and has been ably protected by senior defensemen Zach Pierce, Nolan Descoteux, Kris Kuppens and junior Connor Handy. Seniors Matt O’Sullivan and Nick Hunnewell and junior Josh Scott have been running the field well as midfielders. Attacks James Loughlin, Scott O’Leary and Derek Whelan have been scoring consistently up front.

There are many key games on the horizon.

Boys' Baseball

The bats have been quiet in the early season for boys' baseball. After the last two seasons, which saw plenty of fireworks on Nash Field, this Milton nine is still finding it’s sea legs. All but one game have been decided by one run either way—a bit more offense will start to put Milton over the top. Junior Alex Harris and senior Greg Schwartz have been handling the bulk of the pitching load. Junior Chris Amhrein is working to get healthy to join the rotation. Senior DH Andrew Hresko has had some big at bats to date.

Track

The track team has enjoyed decent weather and is looking competitive in many events as the season picks up. Recently, Jasmine Reid broke the all-time Milton record in the 300 meter intermediate hurdle event. Congratulations to Jasmine! Senior captain Liz Bloom has been a respected leader while running well in the 100 meter dash. Senior Shavonne Hart and junior Serena Piol will also score well in a number of events.

Senior captain James Williams and sophomore Adrian Alston-Moore are both jumping above 19 feet in the high jump. The squad is looking to see who steps forward in the hurdle events while Samuel Collins and Thomas Shaw, both stars of the cross-country season, have been consistent distance runners.

Sailing

This year's sailing team captains are Bernardo Schumacher, Katie St. George and Massimo Soriano. There is a strong core of returning members including Will Hutchings, Rebecca Feinberg, Abbott Cowen, Catie O'Sullivan and Jessica McHugh. These students have been racking up points on the water. Louis Padnos is a new skipper on the roster. During March break the team sailed out of the Annapolis Yacht Club for five days. They practiced for one afternoon with the Annapolis High School team but otherwise ran their own program to get back in shape for the season.

Last season the team was 7-1 racing in New England while winning the O'Day Trophy and the New England Title for the first time since 2001. The regional finishes secured a berth at both the high school fleet racing and team racing nationals. Fleet Racing nationals were in Long Beach, California, and the team finished in sixth, while team racing nationals were in New Orleans, Louisiana, where they finished in sixth place as well.

If everything comes together and team chemistry remains solid, we could build on last year's results. The key will be confidence in our ability because individually we have what it takes to be in the top five nationally. The Milton boats were repaired this winter which should improve our practices substantially. Thanks to all the parents who contributed to that campaign.

Golf

The co-ed golf team is off to a fine start. Senior Leif Jacobsen has been steady in the top slot. Leif enters the season with a 1.5 handicap. Seniors Connell Driscoll, Tyler Hayes and Elaine Lin, juniors Sam Schuffenecker and Britt Eberts, and sophomore Carl Pun have also played steady golf. There have been wins vs. Middlesex and Lawrence and even matches against Thayer and arch rival Nobles.

The girls are looking toward New Englands on May 5 in Greenwich, CT while the boys are gunning for the ISL’s at Pine Brook Country Club in Needham, MA.

Softball

The girls' varsity softball team is off to a strong start while posting some of their best offensive numbers in years. The team is led by senior co-captains Chelsey Locarno and Dineen Boyle. Isabelle Gell-Levey has been the top pitcher and is also batting an impressive .611 with five RBIs. Other batting leaders are Locarno, senior Mary Bruynell .438, sophomore Alex Jaeger .412, senior Dineen Boyle .389, and junior Caitlin Hickey .316. Junior Sophia Rabb leads the team in stolen bases with six. Senior Brooke Rice has had some key at-bats helping to move runners in the designated player role.

Newcomers to the team include sophomore Erin McDaniel, freshman Alana Dovner and seniors Claire Berkman and Rachiny Samek. Milton hopes to continue its offensive success and sharpen its defensive game as the season rolls on.
