New to a student advising system?
Here's what you can expect
What is an advisor?
An advisor is a faculty member who helps oversee and guide your child's overall experience at Milton, and serves as the main communication link between you and the School, on matters that relate to your child. Each faculty member typically advises six to eight students. Boarding students' advisors usually live in, or are closely associated with a student's house. Students in Classes IV - I often have the same advisor for all their Milton years. Middle school students have one advisor in Classes VI and V, and a different advisor for Classes IV - I. More

Annual Fund Update – The Numbers Are In
Milton parents strongly supported The Annual Fund during the last School year. The Parents’ Fund reached 73 percent participation to beat our goal of 70 percent and raised $632,846. The Lower School reached 83 percent, surpassing last year’s participation rate of 80 percent. In an economically uncertain year, this was a terrific accomplishment.

Thank you to the more than 40 parent volunteers whose efforts helped make this year’s Annual Fund a success. Organized into class committees, parent representatives made hundreds of phone calls as they worked to reach the highest participation rate since 1997. We extend special appreciation to the Parents’ Fund Chairs, Roxanna and Jeff Hurst ’74 and Lower School Chair, Ned Pride ’76, for guiding the year’s efforts.

Milton depends upon Annual Fund every day, as the Fund provides 8 percent of the school’s operating budget. These funds contribute to competitive faculty salaries, financial aid, extensive extracurricular activities, technology and facilities.

Interested in joining the effort?
The upcoming school year is a great time to get involved as a parent fund-raising class representative. As a representative for your child’s class(es), from your home you can make connections via phone or email with other Milton families, or call from a Milton phonathon in the spring or fall. The time commitment is flexible, and the goal is that parents reach all fellow parents to ask personally for support of the Milton Annual Fund. If you would like to get involved as a parent representative, please contact Hilary Smyth in the Development Office at (617) 898-2386 or email hilary_smyth@milton.edu. We need new class representatives, and we hope you will consider joining us this year!

Class I Gift – The Tradition Continues
For the past 19 years, Class I parents have collectively given a special “thank you” gift to the School, an expression of appreciation for their children’s experience. Class I ’03 added to this philanthropic legacy with their gift of $454,303 from 92 percent of the families. This is the second highest participation rate in the history of the Class I Gift; the Class of 1999 was the last class surpass 90 percent.

The Class I ’03 Gift provided money for the Class I Common Room in the student-faculty center, set to open this fall. The Class I Commons will provide a unifying space for seniors this year and in the future, as they enjoy shared space of their own atop Milton’s central student building.

Twenty-five Class I parents volunteered their time as members of the Class I ’03 Gift Committee, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Carol and Jeff Miller and Joan Mullen. Their phone calls, letters and personal touches made this campaign a success. Thank you.

2004 Is Right Around the Corner
We invite parents of students in the Class of 2004 to join the Class I ’04 Gift Committee at an informational meeting on October 14, at 7:00 p.m. Parents of boarding students who live a distance from campus are welcome to join us as volunteers without attending this first informational meeting. In fact, since so much of the effort happens via phone and email, you can volunteer from anywhere across the globe! The Class I’03 committee included families from Illinois, New Jersey, New York and even Jamaica. If you plan to attend the meeting or if you are unable to attend and would like to learn more about being a Class I volunteer, please contact Hilary Smyth at (617) 898-2386 or hilary_smyth@milton.edu.

Mark Stanek,
Middle School Principal
To provide distinct and focused leadership for the experience of Middle School-aged students, Mark J. Stanek joined Milton this summer as the first Middle School principal.

A native of upstate New York, Mark comes to Milton from the Athenian School in Danville, California, where he was dean of students for the middle school, a mathematics teacher and coach of the school’s track and field team. Mark’s experience as a teacher, administrator, coach and leader of extracurricular activities began in 1992, upon his graduation from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. In addition to his work at the Athenian School, Mark’s independent school experience spans Culver Academies (Culver, Indiana), Kentucky Country Day School (Louisville, Kentucky) and Samuel Proctor Academy (Trenton, New Jersey).
