Tutoring and Classroom Assistance

BOSTON PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Milton students have an opportunity to tutor elementary school students (gr.K-6) in the Boston public school system. Students need to have a double free period to act as a classroom assistant or an individual student’s tutor/mentor and be seriously committed to going every week. Traditionally, this is one of Milton's most popular and successful service opportunities. It has developed into a long-standing partnership with two schools in particular, the Taylor and Holmes Elementary Schools, as well as the more recent collaboration with the Ellison-Parks School focusing on their Reading Buddies program. An additional special opportunity at the Taylor School is the weekly arts and crafts activities that our volunteers conduct with all the first grade classrooms.

EPIPHANY MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Epiphany School is located 15 minutes up the road in Dorchester. It offers middle school students (who have struggled in the Boston public schools) an intensive 12-hour school day. They receive a great deal of individual attention in academics, as well as extra-curriculars. Volunteers are needed to tutor students in a variety of subjects during the evening study hall T-Th 5:30-7:300pm. Volunteers are welcome to assist with afterschool sports and speech programs, pending transportation and scheduling.

MILTON ACADEMY LOWER SCHOOL
In our own Lower School (Grades K-4), volunteers help as classroom aides in science, math, writing and computers, as individual mentors, and are also welcome to help during lunchtime and in the library. One special opportunity is to be a book discussion group leader for grade 4; we seek volunteers who are particularly interested and dedicated to this kind of activity with the same small group of fourth graders each week. Lower School placements are well suited to students who only have a single free period, since it is located right on campus.

MILTON PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Milton Academy students have gone in great numbers to assist youngsters and their teachers in Milton public elementary schools just down the road. The Glover, Tucker, Collicott, and Cunningham Schools are especially fond of our volunteers, and vice-versa. Academy volunteers tutor in a variety of grade levels (K-5) and subjects, as well as to help with organized play at recess time. There is always a need for volunteers who can work with children in French immersion classrooms, as well as Spanish.

THE SATURDAY COURSE

Most Saturday mornings during the school year the Milton Academy campus is host to public middle school students who come to take courses in a wide range of subjects, such as science, writing, photography, sculture, etc. Student volunteers can assist teachers in the classes/labs or even help teach the courses. It runs from 9:30-12:30 in two sessions.
