Milton hosted the award-winning historical play Show Me the Franklins! Remembering the Ancestors, Slavery and Benjamin Franklin on February 4 in King Theatre. Milton was one of three Boston schools that presented the play, as well as residency activities with the author and actors from Theatre for Transformation, to celebrate Black History Month.
Through music, movement and sometimes humorous scenes, three actors and scholar Amanda Kemp dramatized how our ancestors might have experienced American slavery and American freedom. This play offered a fresh perspective on Franklin, who died as president of the abolitionist society without ever having freed one of his own slaves. Dr. Kemp was joined by Theatre for Transformation ensemble actors Perry Di Virgilio, Deborah Billups and Swarthmorean Mary Ferrell and co-director Dave Ebersole.
Founded by Dr. Amanda Kemp, Theatre for Transformation is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has received funding from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts to present and tour Show Me the Franklins!
