Apthorp Chapel

Constructed in 1921 to honor Milton students who served in World War I, Apthorp Chapel stands as a historic and reflective space on campus.

Non-denominational since its opening, the chapel has long served as a gathering place for community, connection, and contemplation. 

Today, Apthorp Chapel continues to play an important role in campus life. Milton Academy uses the space for speakers, assemblies, and musical performances. Its peaceful atmosphere and timeless architecture make it a meaningful setting for weddings, memorial services, and other private events. 

Named after Harrison Otis Apthorp, who served as Milton’s principal and headmaster from 1887 to 1904, the chapel is dedicated to Milton graduates who died in WWI and whose names are memorialized on the War Memorial tablet located on the west wall of the chapel. The chapel also served as a strategic location for air raid observers during World War II. The flagpole just outside the chapel serves as the site for Milton’s annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Surrounding the chapel are two beautiful outdoor spaces that invite both introspection and community. The Reflection Garden offers a serene place for contemplation, while the Bland Family Terrace, dedicated in 2023 in honor of Head of School Todd Bland P'13 '14 '14 and his family, is a welcoming stone patio and gathering space overlooking the Quad.
