Milton Academy, established in 1798, is an independent coeducational national boarding and day school, serving 1,000 students in grades K-12 on a 125-acre campus eight miles south of Boston.
Milton Academy seeks a grade six social studies teacher committed to inclusive, multicultural teaching and practice for sabbatical leave coverage in the Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year. We are looking for teachers who have a passion for working with the middle school age group and teaching social studies. A bachelor’s degree is required and a concentration in history is expected. A minimum of three years of teaching experience at the middle or secondary level is required. Additional duties typically include advising, sponsoring a club or activity and participating in faculty meetings and professional development.
The sixth-grade social studies program focuses on human origins, diversity of indigenous peoples, and modern migration, emigration, and immigration. Students learn to think like social scientists — archaeologists, anthropologists, philosophers, and psychologists — as they connect history with science. Connecting with social studies teachers in the Middle School and coordination and collaboration with the sixth-grade team on grade-level projects is central to the role.
Qualified candidates will possess excellent communication and writing skills, and proficiency with technology is assumed. Flexibility, creativity, a sense of humor, a strong work ethic and a commitment to being a strong team member are all critically important. Demonstrated ability working in a diverse community is essential. Teacher certification is not required.
