For the past several years, Milton Academy has been working on creating a Reflection Garden to honor and show respect for students and community members, both present and past, who have experienced challenges during their time at Milton. The garden is a joint project between current leadership and alumni that will serve as a living monument to our community’s collective experiences across the full range of human emotion.
One of the garden’s inspirations is our alumni survivors of historical sexual misconduct at Milton. Planners invited artists to submit proposals for a commissioned piece of art to reflect the breadth and complexity of emotions, which can be paradoxical (how there is joy in sorrow and sorrow in joy). This art piece will be a permanent fixture intended to honor alumni survivors and to recognize the harm that may still exist as a result. After reviewing several proposals, the school’s Leadership Team and the Garden Committee have chosen to offer the commission to Andreas von Huene, a sculptor from Maine who has previously shown his work at Milton as a visiting artist.
One of the known survivors from the school’s independent investigation into past misconduct, Jamie Forbes ’85, has been involved in the planning since the beginning. The school invites other survivors to contribute their voices to the process of co-creating the artwork for the garden.
The committee has compiled this form to solicit ideas and collect feedback. The submissions are anonymous, though you have the opportunity to share your contact information if you would like to be contacted directly about this project.
