2015–2016 Report on Giving
Over the course of Milton’s history, many individuals have shown forethought and for securing the School’s future by contributing to the endowment. The legacy of thoughtful endowment donors is the foundation on which Milton can build upon its successes and achieve its vision.
As of June 30, 2016, the School’s endowment comprised of more than 350 separate endowed funds totaling $256 million. During 2015–2016, donors made gifts to the endowed funds listed below. At any time, additional gifts may be made to these funds as well as any other endowed fund at Milton. Supporting and enriching student life
Louis Andrews Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1974 to benefit a student in Class II who has best fulfilled his or her potential in the areas of intelligence, self-discipline, physical ability, concern for others and integrity.
Merrick and Lindsey Axel Scholarship Fund*
Established in 2015 to support a student in need of financial assistance at Milton Academy.
Joseph W. Barry, Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1996 to support a student born in the United States in need of financial aid.
Bennett Family Scholarship
Established in 2013 to provide support for students whose financial situation has been adversely impacted by health issues, including the death of a parent, or an illness impacting a parent, sibling or the student.
Jackie Bonenfant Scholarship*
Established in 2015 to provide financial aid to deserving Milton students interested in math, with a preference to female students.
Ebenezer Francis Bowditch ’31 Scholarship
Established in 1990 to enable students of different cultures to attend Milton Academy.
Dr. Robert LeSourd Bradley ’64 Archeology Fund
Established in 2001, awarded every two years, supporting a student’s participation in an archeological dig.
Henry and Thelma Castro Scholarship
Established in 1996 to support scholarship for students regardless of economic background.
Chan Family Endowment
Established in 2008 to support faculty, scholarship, and the residential life activities of Millet House in honor of Mr. Millet.
Phillip Coolidge ’66 Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1984 to support general scholarship.
Douglas ’58 and Cynthia Crocker Scholarship
Established in 2007 to support a full scholarship for an Upper School student who best exemplifies intellectual curiosity, academic achievement, collegiality and athleticism.
Theodore Jacqueline Dane Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1962 as a scholarship to a deserving girl and retained by that girl until she graduates.
Mark Denneen Scholarship
Established in 2007 to support financial aid for a qualified student from a Massachusetts public school.
David C. Dudley ’45 Scholarship
Established in 1945 to support scholarship for one or more Milton Academy boys from the first year they receive the scholarship through the year of their graduation.
Endowment for Financial Aid
Established prior to 2006 to support financial aid and is an accumulation of gifts that have indicated a preference for scholarship received in the last 50 years.
Mary Ilsley Farnham ’29 Scholarship
Established in 2010 to honor Mary Ilsley Farnham’s commitment to Milton and supports a scholarship for a qualified student each year.
Established in 2014 to support students with financial need.
Edward Spence Fitzgibbons Memorial Fund
Established in 2015 by Caroline Fitzgibbons ’84 to provide unrestricted support to be used at the discretion of the HOS.
Thomas and Frances Flaherty Scholarship
Established in 2008 to support a Class II boarding student who exhibits athletic and academic excellence, and has earned the respect of teachers, coaches, and peers.
Fund for Academic and Athletic Excellence
Established in 2008 to provide financial aid to a female athlete participating in varsity soccer. If such a girl cannot be identified, the scholarship will be granted to another female athlete.
Thomas B. Gannett ’31 Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1968 to support a scholarship for one Milton Academy male student from the year he receives the scholarship through his senior year.
Gerney Family Fund
Established in 1998 to provide assistance to a boarding student with financial need.
Harlow Keith and Elizabeth Otis Hammond Scholarship
Established in 1968 to support one or more boarding students who are sons of Boys’ School graduates.
Ralph Hornblower Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1986 to benefit a male scholar athlete.
Established in 1987 to fund scholarships, with preference awarded to children of employees of not-for-profit educational institutions.
Korean War Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1956 to fund scholarship for a student, preferably from developing countries or regions.
Samuel M. Lane 1927 Scholarship
Established in 1967 to support scholarship intended for a boy or girl in the Upper School, and offers tuition support through graduation.
Yunli Lou ’87 Scholarship Fund*
Established in 2016 to support students in need of financial assistance.
Robert ’75 and Dana Lyons Scholarship
Established in 2015 to provide financial aid to deserving Milton students.
Abigail B. Mackey Scholarship
Established in 2001 to provide financial assistance for one or more female students entering Milton Academy in Class II and III, with a demonstrated interest in mathematics or science, a clear need for financial assistance, and a background that differs from the usual.
Frank D. Millet Scholarship
Established in 1997 for students with financial need who have attended Milton Academy for at least one year; who demonstrate high moral integrity, support of classmates, and have established meaningful relationships with peers and faculty. Millet scholars are students who, by virtue of their character and deeds, are integral members of their class and hold great promise as leaders.
Gretel Zinsser Munroe Scholarship
Established in 1995 to support scholarship for students demonstrating financial need.
Nicole and Terry Murray Scholarship Fund*
Established in 2015 to provide financial aid to deserving Upper School students who are residents of the City of Boston.
Reginald and Rebecca Lord Nash Scholarship
Established in 1980 to fund a “motivated boy, with academic and athletic promise,” and remains with him until he graduates.
Willis Nichols, Jr. ’30 Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1986 to fund a partial aid scholarship to one or more female boarding students until they graduate.
Paiz Family Fund for Financial Aid*
Established in 2016 to support students in need of financial aid.
Jennifer Pham Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2011 to honor the memory of Jennifer Pham and the income supports a young woman with exceptional promise.
Daniel Pierce ’52 and Polly Harding Pierce ’52 Scholarship
Established in 2005 to support a student in the Upper or Lower Schools, and it remains with that student through their graduation.
John Sherburne Reidy Day Scholarship
Established in 1999 to support a day student scholarship.
Charles Parker Reynolds Scholarship Fund
Established in 1919 to support students who exemplify leadership, sportsmanship and scholarship.
Beatrice Rugo Family Scholarship
Established in 1992 to support scholarship to any student who qualifies under the Academy’s standards of academic achievement and need for financial assistance.
Peter M. Sacerdote Scholarship Fund*
Established in 2016 to support a student(s) in need of financial assistance, with a preference for a day student.
Albert J. Scullin ’55 Scholarship
Established in 2005 to supports scholarship.
Nina Seidenman Scholarship
Established in 2008 to support scholarship for local inner-city students.
E. Skinner, Jr. ’47 Scholarship
Established in 1970 to support scholarship for an Upper School boy until the year he graduates.
Lawrence A. Sykes Scholarship
Established in 2008 to support diversity within the Upper School day student population.
Thomas C. Wales ’70 Scholarship
Established in 2003 to support financial aid for a student in the A Better Chance program, including support for travel, books, clothes or other items not covered by financial aid for a student from Washington State, or if no suitable candidate exists, from Massachusetts.
Andrew H. Ward Scholarship
Established in 2004 to fund a day scholarship by reviving the scholarship originally established in 1936 by the alumni council in honor of Andrew H. Ward.
Yeh Family Fund
Established in 2007 to provide financial aid for students from Greater China and the Academy’s on-going operations. If there is no student who meets the description, funds may be used to assist a student of Chinese heritage. The amount is to be split evenly between these two priorities.
Established in 2006 to support a Class I student who represents those traits and characteristics exemplified by Dr. Miguel Zinny including compassion, diligence, a keen intellect and deep respected from peers and faculty.

Established in 2012 to underwrite faculty compensation.
The L Chan Fund for Teaching Excellence*
Established in 2016 to provide faculty support for teachers of creative writing.

Class I ’98 Faculty Endowment
Established in 1998 to support and celebrate excellence in teaching.
Class I 2013 Faculty Innovation Fund
Established in 2013 by the parents of the Class of 2013 to provide faculty members opportunities to pursue innovative and fresh ideas to enhance their craft, and be further implemented into their curricula—making Milton a top institution for the 21st century.

Established in 1995 to support faculty salaries, curriculum development, faculty professional development, faculty chairs or stipends.
Greer Fund for Faculty Support
Established in 1999 to support faculty salaries and curriculum innovation.
Grossman Family Fund
Established in 1992 to provide faculty support in the areas of math and science, English and creative writing, and the Classics.
Grossman Family Fund for Faculty Compensation*
Established in 2016 to support compensation for Middle and Upper School faculty members.
Eric and Mary Hartmann Memorial Fund for Faculty Enrichment
Established in 1987 to aid, at the Head of School’s discretion, faculty members with unusual or extraordinary needs.
TS Kim Faculty Endowment*
Established in 2016 to support faculty.
Henry and Winifred Lyons Fund
Established in 2015 to support faculty growth and development.
Frank D. Millet Chair in Admission
Established in 1995 to support the Director of Admissions position.
Ronald Moir Fund for Counseling
Established in 1983 to support hiring and maintaining of professionals for the full-time counseling program.
Michael ’96 and Beth O’Brien P ’26 ’28 Faculty Fund
Established in 2015 to underwrite faculty salaries.
FAO Schwarz Family K-8 Faculty Development Fund*
Established in 2016 to support K-8 faculty development.
Paul, Anna and Paul Swett Jr. Memorial Fellowship
Established in 1968 to provide one or more faculty members with the means for creative or experimental study, teaching or travel.

Todd and Nancy Bland P’13 ’14 ’14 Fund for Endowment*
Established in 2015 by Todd and Nancy Bland to support Milton Academy, its faculty and students.
Brad Bloom Permanent Endowment
Established in 2010. Gifts to this fund have no designation, and the corpus cannot be spent.
Cox Endowment Fund
Established in 1974 to support the library.
Established in 1887. The income is unrestricted. Trustees may also use the principal if they choose.
Guy D’Oyly Hughes Endowed Fund
Established in 2013 to support the Endowment.
Kalra Family Lower School Discretionary Fund*
Established in 2016 to support the needs of Milton Academy’s Lower School.
Kalra Family Middle School Discretionary Fund*
Established in 2016 to support the needs of Milton Academy’s Middle School.
Stephen and Lisa Lebovitz P ’10 ’12 ’14 ’17 Family Endowment*
Established in 2015 to support Milton’s facilities and general campus improvements.
Albert and Mary Lou Norris Memorial Fund
Established in 1982 to support the cost of school needs, as determined by the Head of School.
Established in 2009, from the estate of Thomas W. Norris, Sr. ’19. The income shall be used as determined at later date by H. Coleman Norris ‘49.
Tracy Pun Palandjian Young Graduate Endowment Fund
Established in 1999. The purpose is restricted.
Permanent Endowment Undesignated
Established in 2014. Gifts to this fund have no designation, and the corpus cannot be spent.
Shih and Lu Fund for Excellence
Established in 2014. The purpose of the Fund is to be determined.
Westphal Family Endowment*
Established in 2015 to support Milton Academy at the discretion of the Head of School.
Yip Family Endowment
Established in 2012 support general operations.

Howard and Susan Abell Fund
Established in 1973 to benefit the Music Department.
Bingham Endowment Fund for Creative Writing
Established in 1987 to support the Creative Writing Program.
Class of ’52 Endowment for Religious Understanding
Established in 2002 support one or more forums for the discussion of the diverse faiths that exist in the United States and throughout the world.
Class of 1953 Love Kindness Endowed Fund
Established in 2013 to support the good works of Milton Academy students in their effort to help others. The fund supports the Community Service Spring break trip to an area where help is needed. Having been raised with and guided by “Dare to be True,” the Class of 1953 would like to leave Milton Academy students with a legacy of Dare to Love Kindness so that they in turn may pass it on to future generations.
Melissa Dilworth Gold ’61 Visiting Artist Fund
Established in 1992 to support the Arts Department bringing a nationally recognized artist to the campus each year.
Roger Hallowell ’28 Memorial Fund
Established in 1991 to support a scholarship for a science student to attend a three-week program each summer through Sea Education at Woods Hole.
Benjamin P. Hermann ’91 Memorial Music Fund
Established in 1994 to support the string orchestra coaches from the New England Conservatory School of Music.
Kaiser Fund for Speech and Debate
Established in 2013 to provide resources to support the performing arts department with a preference given to the speech and debate team.
Koltun Family Fund for Science
Established in 2010 to support the Science Department in alternate years. In the years that the income is received, it will be used to supplement the department’s equipment needs. The funds will be spent in alternate years of the Koltun Family Fund for Wrestling.
Merritt Levitan ’13 Student Life Innovation Fund
Established in 2015 to support student programming initiatives intended to improve student life and community service.
Lyman Fund for Media Development
Established in 2013 by Charles P. Lyman ’60 to augment film courses or courses in the Visual Arts, which promote the development, study and understanding of the moving image.
Pang Technology Fund*
Established in 2015 to fund technology infrastructure.
Margaret Filoon Robertson ’56 Music Fund
Established in 1996 to support travel for music groups and a pre-tour concert named in honor of Margaret Filoon Robertson ’56.
Stikeleather Family Fund
Established in 2014 to support and encourage innovative curriculum in grades K-12.
David S. Stone ’70 Endowed Fund for Science Enrichment
Established in 2005 to provide essential support in the area of program enrichment through alliances with the regional scientific community, and provides financial support to enable the extraordinary student to participate in these opportunities.
Swim Team Endowment
Established in 2006 to support the swim team.
Creating a campus that supports learning and living
David Rolbein Fund
Established in 1994 to maintain Milton Academy’s buildings and grounds.
Herbert G. Stokinger ’24 Fund for Physical Education
Established in 1995 to support over and above the regular budget for the Milton facilities.

Robert L. Daley Prize
Established in 1984 to support a prize in the Classics to a student from Latin 4 or beyond who best exemplifies Mr. Daley’s love of language.
Laurence S. Persky ’79 Memorial Prize
Established in 1981 to recognize an outstanding effort of any type in any Milton publication.
Joseph O. Procter ’32 MVP Award for Golf
Established in 1990 to recognize a student who embodies the qualities of Mr. Procter, whose love of the challenge and etiquette of golf enriched his life and the lives of his friends and family.
Williams Squash Prize
Established in 1972 to support the following squash awards: Albert C. Williams Prize to the All-School Squash Champion; the Ralph B. Williams, III Prize for the male Most Valuable Player in Squash; and the Ralph B. Williams, Jr. Prize for the female Most Valuable Player in Squash.
