2016–2017 Report on Giving

Over the course of Milton’s history, many individuals have shown forethought and for securing the School’s future by contributing to the endowment. The legacy of thoughtful endowment donors is the foundation on which Milton can build upon its successes and achieve its vision.

As of June 30, 2017, the School’s endowment comprised of more than 370 separate endowed funds totaling $291 million. During 2016–2017, donors made gifts to the endowed funds listed below. At any time, additional gifts may be made to these funds as well as any other endowed fund at Milton. Supporting and enriching student life

Louis Andrews Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1974 to support students in Class II who best fulfill their potential in the areas of intelligence, self-discipline, physical ability, concern for others and integrity.

ATM Scholarship*
Established in 2016 to support financial aid.

Bennett Family Scholarship
Established in 2013 to provide financial aid to students whose financial situation has been adversely impacted by health issues, including the death of a parent, or an illness impacting a parent, sibling or the student.

Jackie Bonenfant Scholarship
Established in 2015 to provide financial aid to deserving Milton students interested in math, with a preference to female students.

Ebenezer Francis Bowditch ’31 Scholarship
Established in 1990 to enable students of different cultures to attend Milton Academy.

Chang Fund for College Counseling*
Established in 2017 to support the College Counseling Office.

Phillip Coolidge ’66 Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1984 to support financial aid.

Douglas ’58 and Cynthia Crocker Scholarship
Established in 2007 to support financial aid.

Mark Denneen Scholarship
Established in 2007 to provide financial aid to qualified students from Massachusetts public schools.

David C. Dudley ’45 Scholarship
Established in 1945 to provide financial aid to male students until they graduate.

Mary Ilsley Farnham ’29 Scholarship
Established in 2010 to honor Mary Ilsley Farnham’s commitment to Milton and support financial aid.

Felipe-Butler Financial Aid Fund for Young Women*
Established in 2017 to support financial aid.

Fitzgibbons Scholarship
Established in 2014 to support financial aid.

Thomas and Frances Flaherty Scholarship
Established in 2008 to provide financial aid to Class II boarding students who exhibit athletic and academic excellence, and have earned the respect of teachers, coaches, and peers.

Thomas B. Gannett ’31 Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1968 to provide financial aid to male students until they graduate.

Gerney Family Fund
Established in 1998 to provide financial aid to boarding students with financial need.

GwinnLandry Family Fund for Scholarship Enrichment*
Established in 2017 to support financial aid.

Nancy Foss Heath Scholarship*
Established in 2016 to support financial aid.

Robert Henry Scholarship*
Established in 2017 to support financial aid for Upper School students.

Ralph Hornblower Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1986 to provide financial aid to male scholar athletes with financial need.

Kellner Scholarship
Established in 1987 to provide financial aid to preferably children of employees of not-for-profit educational institutions.

Korean War Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1956 to provide financial aid to students preferably from developing countries or regions.

Samuel M. Lane 1927 Scholarship
Established in 1967 to provide financial aid to for Upper School students until they graduate.

Lisa Donohue ’83 Fund for Academic and Athletic Excellence
Established in 2008 to provide financial aid to female athletes participating in varsity soccer.

Yunli Lou ’87 Scholarship Fund
Established in 2016 to support financial aid.

Robert ’75 and Dana Lyons Scholarship
Established in 2015 to support financial aid.

Abigail B. Mackey Scholarship
Established in 2001 to provide financial aid to female students, entering Milton Academy in Class II and III, with a demonstrated interest in mathematics or science, a clear need for financial assistance, and a background that differs from the usual.

Frank D. Millet Scholarship
Established in 1997 to provide financial aid to students who have attended Milton Academy for at least one year; who demonstrate high moral integrity, support of classmates, and have established meaningful relationships with peers and faculty. Millet scholars are students who, by virtue of their character and deeds, are integral members of their class and hold great promise as leaders.

Nicole and Terry Murray Scholarship Fund
Established in 2015 to provide financial aid to deserving Upper School students who are residents of the City of Boston.

H. Reginald and Rebecca Lord Nash Scholarship
Established in 1980 to provide financial aid to male students with academic and athletic promise until they graduate.

H. Willis Nichols, Jr. ’30 Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1986 to provide partial scholarships to female boarding students until they graduate.

Michael ’96 and Beth O’Brien P’26 ’28 Scholarship*
Established in 2016 to support financial aid to help recruit the best and brightest students.

Paiz Family Fund for Financial Aid
Established in 2016 to support students in need of financial aid.

Daniel Pierce ’52 and Polly Harding Pierce ’52 Scholarship
Established in 2005 to provide financial aid to students until they graduate.

Pouliot Family Fund
Established in 2014 to support trips and programs for students receiving financial aid so that they may enjoy every facet of the Milton experience.

John Sherburne Reidy Day Scholarship
Established in 1999 to support a day student scholarship.

Charles Parker Reynolds Scholarship Fund
Established in 1919 to provide financial aid for Upper School students who exemplify leadership, sportsmanship and scholarship.

Nina Riggs ’95 Memorial Scholarship*
Established in 2017 to support students in need of financial assistance.

Scholarship Enrichment Endowed Fund
Established in 2015 to support extracurricular needs and programs for Milton students who receive financial aid.

Albert J. Scullin ’55 Scholarship
Established in 2005 to support financial aid.

Nina Seidenman Scholarship
Established in 2008 to provide financial aid for local inner-city students.

S. E. Skinner, Jr. ’47 Scholarship
Established in 1970 to provide financial aid for Upper School male students until they graduate.

Lawrence A. Sykes Scholarship
Established in 2008 to support diversity within the Upper School day student population.

H.C. Ting Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1990 to support financial aid for a student throughout his or her career at Milton.

Thomas C. Wales ’70 Scholarship
Established in 2003 to support financial aid for a student in the A Better Chance program, including support for travel, books, clothes or other items not covered by financial aid for a student from Washington State, or if no suitable candidate exists, from Massachusetts.

Edward W. Weld Scholarship
Established in 2007 to support financial aid.

Yip Family Scholarship*
Established in 2017 to provide financial aid support to advance racial, ethnic and/or income diversity within Milton Academy’s student body.

Zinny Scholarship
Established in 2006 to support Class I students who represent those traits and characteristics exemplified by Dr. Miguel Zinny including compassion, diligence, keen intellect and deep respect from peers and faculty.

Established in 1973 to benefit the Music Department.

David B. Ball Faculty Salary Fund
Established in 2012 to underwrite faculty compensation.

The L Chan Fund for Teaching Excellence
Established in 2016 to provide support for teachers of creative writing.

Established in 2016 for faculty support.

Class I of 2008 Faculty Fund
Established in 2008 for faculty support.

Class I ’98 Faculty Endowment
Established in 1998 to support and celebrate excellence in teaching.

Beverly and Charles Donohue P ’80 ’81 ’83 Fund for Faculty*
Established in 2016 to support faculty excellence and used to support faculty without restriction to purpose.

Endowment for Computer Science
Established in 2017 to support the study of computer science.

Endowment for Faculty Support
Established in 1995 to support faculty salaries, curriculum development, faculty professional development, faculty chairs or stipends.

Endowment for Faculty Salaries
Established in 1951 to support faculty salaries.

Fund to Support the Teaching of Chinese
Established in 2013 to support the long-term strength of Milton’s Chinese language program.

Greer Fund for Faculty Support
Established in 1999 to support faculty salaries and curriculum innovation.

Grossman Family Fund for Faculty Compensation
Established in 2016 to support compensation for Middle and Upper School faculty members.

Eric and Mary Hartmann Memorial Fund for Faculty Enrichment
Established in 1987, used at the Head of School’s discretion, to aid faculty members with unusual or extraordinary needs.

Hong Kong Community Engagement Fund*
Established in 2017 to support programmatic and/or administrative support for Milton Academy’s activities in Hong Kong.

Kalra Family Lower School Discretionary Fund
Established in 2016 to support the needs of Milton Academy’s Lower School.

Kalra Family Middle School Discretionary Fund
Established in 2016 to support the needs of Milton Academy’s Middle School.

TS Kim Faculty Endowment
Established in 2016 to support faculty.

Merrill Ladd K-8 Faculty Development Fund*
Established in 2016 to support K-8 faculty development.

Laurence M. Lombard 1913 Teaching Chair
Established in 1970 to honor excellence in the teaching of social sciences.

Lower School Discretionary Fund
Established in 1958 to support Lower School needs, at the discretion of the Lower School principal.

Lyman Fund for Media Development
Established in 2013 by Charles P. Lyman ’60 to provide budget augmentation for the film courses or courses in the Visual Arts, which promote the development, study and understanding of the moving image.

Frank D. Millet Chair in Admission
Established in 1995 to support the Director of Admissions position.

Ronald Moir Fund for Counseling
Established in 1983 to support hiring and maintaining of professionals for the full-time counseling program.

Michael ’96 and Beth O’Brien P ’26 ’28 Faculty Fund
Established in 2015 to underwrite faculty salaries.

Pang Technology Fund
Established in 2015 to fund technology infrastructure.

Larry Pollans Fund*
Established in 2017 by Stephen D. Lebovitz P’10 ’12 ’14 ’17 to support the Visual Arts.

Stikeleather Family Fund
Established in 2014 to support and encourage innovative curriculum in grades K-12.

David S. Stone ’70 Endowed Fund for Science Enrichment
Established in 2005 to provide essential support in the area of program enrichment through alliances with the regional scientific community, and provides financial support to enable the extraordinary student to participate in these opportunities.

Paul, Anna and Paul Swett Jr. Memorial Fellowship
Established in 1968 to provide one or more faculty members with the means for creative or experimental study, teaching or travel.

Esther Tsang Faculty Fund*
Established in 2017 to provide faculty support.

Donald C. Watson Faculty Support Fund*
Established in 2017 by Pamela Watson Sebastian ’62 to support Upper School faculty salaries and professional development.

 

Enabling inspirational curriculum and programs

Dr. Robert LeSourd Bradley ’64 Archeology Fund
Established in 2001 to support a student to participate in an archeological dig, every two years beginning in 2008.

H. Adams Carter ’32 Outdoor Education Fund
Established in 1996 to support the Outdoor Program.

Class of 1953 Love Kindness Endowed Fund
Established in 2013 to support the good works of Milton Academy students in their effort to help others.

Melissa Dilworth Gold ’61 Visiting Artist Fund
Established in 1992 to support the Arts Department bringing a nationally recognized artist to the campus each year.

Gratwick Concert Fund
Established in 1930 to support the School hosting a concert by a distinguished musician or group of musicians.

Grossman Family Fund
Established in 1992 to provide faculty support in the areas of math and science, English and creative writing, and the Classics.

Kaiser Fund for Speech and Debate
Established in 2013 to provide resources to support the performing arts department with a preference given to the speech and debate team.

Merritt Levitan ’13 Student Life Innovation Fund
Established in 2015 to support student-programming initiatives intended to improve student life and community service.

Laurence S. Persky ’79 Memorial Prize
Established in 1981 to recognize an outstanding effort of any type in any Milton publication.

Margaret Filoon Robertson ’56 Music Fund
Established in 1996 to support travel for music groups and a pre-tour concert named in honor of Margaret Filoon Robertson ’56.

 

Creating a campus that supports learning and living

Stephen and Lisa Lebovitz P ’10 ’12 ’14 ’17 Family Endowment
Established in 2015 to support Milton’s facilities and general campus improvements.

 

Recognizing student achievement

Henry Warder Carey ’39 Prize
Established in 1945 and awarded to members of Class I, who, in public speaking and oral interpretation have shown consistent effort, thoroughness of preparation and concern for others.

Joseph O. Procter ’32 MVP Award for Golf
Established in 1990 to recognize a student who embodies the qualities of Mr. Procter whose love of the challenge and etiquette of golf enriched his life and the lives of his friends and family.

Williams Squash Prize
Established in 1972 to award the Albert C. Williams Prize to the winner of the All-School Squash Championship; the Ralph B. Williams, III Prize for the male Most Valuable Player in Squash; and the Ralph B. Williams, Jr. Prize for the female Most Valuable Player in Squash.
