swap_it_sm_1A sparkly purple jacket, tie-dyed leggings, a faux fur scarf, and a hat worthy of a Dr. Seuss character. Sounds crazy? It’s a student’s typical basketful of goodies, proudly compiled from Swap-It, Milton’s much-loved annual second-hand sale.

A tradition for over 60 years, Milton’s K–8 families are hard at work organizing the enormous sale of quality treasures—outerwear and sports gear, books and games, furniture, home accessories and designer clothing—that also happen to have been used and donated by families in the Milton community. Teams of parents accept, sort, price and organize thousands of donations that pour in during the days before the sale, then manage the crowds and the cashiering.

For Upper School students, Swap-It represents not only a chance to find rare and hip t-shirts—it is the source for outfits that ordinarily would be just figments of imagination. The much-anticipated Swap-It dance relies on creative purchasing and layering of very affordable finery from the Swap-It “racks.” The Swap-It dance, on Friday, October 26, is the place to see and be seen, and to show off your colorful, bargain apparel.

Families working on the collection part of Swap-It want to be sure that Milton’s Upper School families know that their contributions to the sale are most welcome. Items that the organizers happily accept include but are not limited to clean clothing, toys, games, baby gear, furniture, rugs, linens, tableware, garden and yard items, art, holiday decorations, books, DVDs, sports equipment, shoes, costumes, ties, handbags, snow gear, luggage, tools and home improvement items, CDs and working electronics. They are not able to accept underwear, pajamas, swimsuits, car seats, cribs, computers, textbooks, VHS cassettes, used linens, outdated electronics, straight downhill skis, rear-entry ski boots, outdated golf equipment, food or anything that’s broken.

You can donate your Swap-It items—at the back of the ACC—every day from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., now through Tuesday, October 23.

Swap-It is open to the public:

Friday, October 26 from 6–9 p.m.
Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 2–5 p.m.
Items will be 50% off from 2–5 p.m. on Saturday.
Note: No sale on Sunday this year

All proceeds benefit the Academy’s K–8. All items remaining at the close of the sale are donated to local charities.
