Welcome to Milton

During the nine-year span from Kindergarten through Grade 8, children deserve a purposeful, vigorous and joyful academic and co-curricular program. Milton Academy is structured to provide the most effective and progressive support for children over these elementary years. Children experience profound growth during this time. They gain intellectual and creative depth and range. Social aptitudes emerge along with new understandings. Each child develops confidence in his or her character and identity. We are attuned to the vastly different and intensely important developmental phases they experience. We are purposeful, over time, in tending to how each child experiences self-realization, skill development and social coherence.

Welcome to Milton Academy’s Office of Lower and Middle School Admission. I am so pleased that you have included Milton in your search for the right school for your child.

At Milton Academy, students achieve their fullest potential within a joyful and vibrant learning community. Here, we combine an inspiring and challenging curriculum with robust co-curricular programs and a strong emphasis on building a life-long love of learning. Founded in 1798, Milton’s powerful tradition of academic excellence continues in a warm, inclusive, and supportive environment. Students and adults in our community are active learners, in and outside of the classroom, and a sense of connectedness permeates our entire community, from students to faculty and staff, to families, and to alumni.

Milton students are encouraged to pursue their passions and explore new interests. As you get to know our school, you will find that from Kindergarten through the Upper School, our students share an insatiable curiosity for learning, creative self-expression, deep support for one another, and a desire to live by our motto, “Dare to be true.”

In our Lower School, students from Kindergarten through Grade 5 learn in small classes where they are nurtured and challenged. Our talented faculty lead children through research-supported curriculum and explore emergent curriculum in fun, energetic settings. Specials classes in art, music, gardening, woodworking, and design spark students’ creative interests and connect to their academic work through exciting, interdisciplinary projects.

Our Middle School students in Grades 6 through 8 balance challenging academics with co-curriculars and have lots of opportunities to develop and explore new interests through clubs, activities, affinity spaces, and community engagement projects. Our Middle School faculty love teaching students this age, as they learn to become more independent and engage in meaningful identity work. Milton’s Middle School students learn through the Harkness method as they prepare for upper school—this discussion-based approach encourages them to make connections in their learning, actively listen, and find their voices.
