Dear members of the Milton Academy community,
As we keep our focus on ensuring the safety of our students now and in the future, we also continue to care for those who were harmed by past sexual abuse in our community. In that regard, we want to update you on the criminal prosecution of Rey Buono, a member of the Milton faculty from 1973 to 1987.
On September 30, 2022, Rey Buono pleaded guilty to two counts of rape of a child. Several survivors made impact statements during the sentencing. Rey Buono was sentenced to five years of probation and will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device for at least three years. He was also required to surrender his passport and will not be allowed to travel outside the contiguous United States. There are several other conditions to his probation, including that he does not work with minors, he registers with the Sex Offender Registry Board, and remains away from Milton.
Milton Academy commends law enforcement for the efforts expended to investigate and prosecute the case, the survivor who bravely came forward to assist in the grand jury indictments against Rey Buono, and those who provided statements in support of the prosecution’s case. While nothing can eradicate the significant and lasting harm that Buono has inflicted on the survivors of his abuse, we hope that Friday’s result will continue the healing process for survivors and our community.
Our top priority remains protecting the students in our care. Working in conjunction with outside experts, Milton has implemented a comprehensive program to help prevent incidents of sexual misconduct and to be able to respond effectively if they were to occur. We annually assess our student education programs, employee professional development programs, and policies and protocols to ensure that we provide a safe environment for our students. We remain committed to the healing of survivors of past sexual abuse in our community, and will continue to take actions that respect and support survivors as they process Friday’s news.
