2020–2021 Exhibits at Milton Academy

Student Installation: I Need ___ To Breathe
Outdoor exhibit in front of the Kellner Performing Arts Center and in the Arts Commons Gallery
October–December 2020

I Need __ To Breathe is an interactive portrait project created by Milton Academy Photography Teacher Scott Nobles, in collaboration with three Advanced Photography students: Thea Chung, Lauren Walker, and Maddie Weiler; and with the assistance from computer programming student, Sebastian Park. The project was started this past summer. Photographic portraits and audio recordings of over 250 participants were captured at multiple Black Lives Matter events, rallies, protests, and vigils throughout the summer of 2020. The imagery has been printed on vinyl banners and is currently displayed as a 150-foot interactive outdoor fence installed in front of the Kellner Performing Arts Center. Along the fence are QR codes that viewers can scan with their smartphones to listen to the important and meaningful voices of the individual participants as they complete the statement “I need __ to breathe.” The images featured inside the Art Commons Gallery highlight those portraits of participants who are from the Milton Academy community. Through honoring George Floyd’s jarring last words, the project asks subjects to name what sustains their lives and feels under threat in an unjust society. Its goal is to amplify the voices of those speaking out against systemic racial inequalities and social injustices.

We are delighted to announce the opening on April 1st of the first (and only) professional Nesto Gallery exhibit of the season—alumnus Mikel Glass Class of 1981 exhibiting several life-size full-length portraits, titled Parity and about “a show of contrasts within traditional portraiture – once an honor primarily bestowed upon those of power and privilege, Glass focuses equal attention on those without status to reveal their inner dignity to those who might otherwise choose to ignore them….” This exhibit is open to the Milton Academy community currently on campus—please respect all social distancing guidelines and facility limits, and no outside visitors are allowed.  And, be sure to see everything exhibited, including the back foyer annex and what is hung in the restroom!
