Spring Break Service Trip

This year’s spring break service trip destination will again be to Belize during the first week of March break. The group’s work has been focused around ongoing renovations and expansion of Ocean Academy, the only high school on the island of Caye Caulker. Participants get to know some of the families of local students, assist in the local elementary school, while physical work projects might include carpentry repairs, painting, yard work, and preparing new classroom space. Ocean Academy peers give an island bike and kayak tour and the week is capped off by a snorkeling outing to one of the world’s most famous coral reefs. The total cost for the trip (including airfare, local transport, accommodations, meals, program fees and insurance) is currently estimated at about $2,900 per person.

Community Engagement Program has sponsored trips in collaboration with Peacework over the past several years to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Belize (see slideshow below), Navajo land in Arizona, and rural Appalachia in West Virginia. Please contact Andrea Geyling-Moore if you have any questions. Early interest signups begin at the Shoparound during the first week of school, followed by an informational meeting at the end of September, a parent meeting on Saturday of Parents’ Weekend, and deposits due by end of October.
