2023–2024 Volunteers and Engagement
Stories Behind the Impact
Building a Stronger Community
In 2023–2024, we reinvigorated our engagement with Milton Academy’s broader community:
- Over 2,400 alumni, parents, and friends attended 100 events hosted by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations in person and online
- Our team of 275 volunteers encouraged deeper participation in fundraising and social initiatives
- Reunion registration continued its upward trend, reaching the highest numbers in the past three years
- We received a record 88 class notes from alumni for Milton Magazine, further demonstrating the strengthening connections and engagement with the school
In this video, Milton Academy Trustee Rana el Kaliouby P ’21 ’27 shares why she chose Milton for her children and how she gives back and engages with the school that has become her family’s home away from home. Sharing a Passion for Research
Milton’s alumni, parents, and friends are called upon each year to speak in classes and at events, assemblies, and webinars. They represent changemakers, leaders, or experts in their fields, helping to keep our students and faculty connected and engaged with excellence in our greater community. In November, the History and Social Sciences Department hosted Dr. Ilyon Woo P ’25 for the Henry R. Heyburn ’39 Lecture in History. During the assembly, she shared her journey as a historical researcher and storyteller, from her early struggles to her New York Times best-selling, “Master Slave Husband Wife,” which the Times listed as one of their 10 Best Books of 2023.
Dr. Woo is no stranger to Milton Academy. Her son is a current student at the school, and she is grateful that he has found an environment where he can embrace his passions and curiosity. She shares, “I was honored and pleased to be invited to speak. I was so impressed by the students’ questions and loved to hear their perspectives and observations. My goal was to animate further their interests, curiosity, and knowledge of historical events. I also wanted to share some of the workings of my passion for the material and my investigative process. I hope my visit inspired the students, whether as they prepare for their history papers or something unrelated that they are passionate about, for which I can provide a shared vocabulary.”
“I want to express my gratitude to the school for the incredible education it provides students, including my child.”

Modeling Cross-Cultural Dialogue
In February, the Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice collaborated with Milton’s Public Issues Board to present “Common Ground: Perspectives on the Black Student Experience at Milton.” Milton welcomed alumni Trustee Dr. Lamont Gordon ’87, Heather Ferguson ’93, and Kasia Ifill ’13, who graciously shared their stories and perspectives alongside current Milton students. Dr. Gordon came to Milton as a boarding student from Washington, D.C. He was among the first advisors for Milton’s Transitions Program and was the head of the Association of Independent Minority Students, Milton’s first affinity group for students of color.
Dr. Gordon’s time at Milton was transformational, and he was grateful for the opportunity to share his experiences with today’s students. He shares, “I believe cross-cultural dialogue is core to a Milton education. For many students, being at Milton may be their first time in a community with people from different backgrounds, so it is a unique opportunity to listen, share, learn, and grow.” Dr. Gordon has dedicated his career to creating pathways to higher education and career opportunities for students from underserved communities. He currently serves as executive director at College Visions in Rhode Island. We are grateful to our alumni who continue to “Dare to be true” and share their time to demonstrate the motto to today’s students.
“Milton was transformative for me in that it gave me a strong academic foundation, put me on a path to become the first in my family to go to college, and expanded my understanding of what was possible for my life. I want to help provide this experience for young people, particularly those from underserved communities.”
—Dr. Lamont Gordon ’87
Building an International Community
This spring, Head of School Dr. Alixe Callen ’88 traveled overseas to meet our alumni and parents in Shanghai, Seoul, Beijing, and Hong Kong. The tour was an opportunity to learn about Milton’s international community and experience their pride and hopes for the school. Alumni and parents in Hong Kong have been especially active members of Milton’s greater community. In addition to hosting a reception for parents and alumni, a dinner for current parents, and a reception for alumni during Alixe’s visit, the Hong Kong Parent and Alumni Association organized several community-building events throughout the year. Highlights include a send-off gathering for students in August, special parent programming in October, a Thanksgiving dinner in November, and inter-boarding school alumni socials in December and March.
Milton is grateful for this year’s Hong Kong Parent and Alumni Association volunteer committee: Stephanie Lau ’95 celebrated ten years of steadfast volunteer leadership this year; Ivan Ting ’92 P ’22 ’25 now leads the Hong Kong Alumni Association and served as a Giving Day challenger; Jessica Cheng ’04 and Jackson Tse ’11 brought amazing new energy and enthusiasm as volunteers; and Trustee Helen Zhu P ’25 has been an advocate for Hong Kong parents and Milton’s boarding community as the leader of the Hong Kong Parent Association. Trustees Hendrick Sin P ’23 ’25 ’27 and Patrick Tsang ’90 P ’27 ’27 also served as event hosts with their partners, Sylvia Sin Lo P ’23 ’25 ’27 and Selena Sun P ’27 ’27. Thank you all for your service. The sense of Milton pride and community is strong all over the world!
A Special Thank You to Our Volunteers
Donating Time and Talent
Each year, Milton relies on the dedication of volunteers who generously share their time and talents to support the financial well-being of our school and to strengthen our community. It is incredibly heartening to witness the effects of our alumni and parent volunteers, who lead by example, champion the Milton Fund and our engagement opportunities, and inspire their peers to give back to Milton. Every volunteer plays a crucial role in ensuring that today’s students receive an extraordinary education by inspiring and encouraging others to support Milton. Below are the alumni, parents, students, and Board of Trustee members who volunteered in 2023–2024. Thank you for going above and beyond for Milton Academy!
