What’s Happening at Milton?

Unearthing a Time Capsule

A time capsule, buried on November 14, 1998, to recognize Milton Academy’s bicentennial year, lay beneath the dirt near the Athletic and Convocation Center for the past 25 years. This month, Steve Zannino, Milton Academy’s associate director of grounds and event planning, and Geordie Dunnington, a member of the Physical Education Department faculty, who were there at its placement, brought it to the surface again. Students and faculty at the time enclosed letters and photos, VHS tapes, school publications, mix tapes, and more to commemorate Milton’s 200th year.

Campus Spotlight: A Perfect Score 💯

Milton’s math competitors have maintained a perfect score through months of competing at the New England Math League (NEML) this academic year. Currently, the school sits atop the NEML rankings, which includes both private and public schools. Math contests give students opportunities outside of the classroom to flex their analytical muscles while proudly representing Milton.

Yvonne Hao P’27 Visits With Economics Club

Milton’s Economics Club recently welcomed Yvonne Hao P ’27 to campus to speak with students. Yvonne is secretary of the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under the Healey-Driscoll Administration. She has more than twenty-five years of executive business experience as a senior executive, including as co-founder, advisor, and managing director at the investment firm Cove Hill Partners and as an operating partner at Pillar Ventures. Yvonne talked about her role in the Healey-Driscoll Administration and discussed her non-linear career path.

CultureFest

A celebration of the many diverse cultures and traditions that make up the Milton community, CultureFest returned to campus this week. Students and adults representing 28 different global cultures filled the Athletic and Convocation Center with food, music, games, and sharing. It was a fun (and delicious!) way to learn about treasured family and cultural practices, art, and cuisine. Thank you to the student organizers and the Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice for a great celebration!

The ninety-third Gratwick concert

The ninety-third Gratwick concert

The ninety-third Gratwick concert took place on Thursday, September 14. The Gratwick Concert Fund was established by Dr. Mitchell Gratwick in memory of his wife, Katharine Perkins Gratwick. She was a cellist and graduate of the Class of 1924.Through Dr. Gratwick’s generosity, and the lasting generosity of his family, thousands of Milton students have benefited from world-class performances. This year, we were thrilled to welcome pianist Clayton Stephenson. In addition to being the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022, he was named the 2022 Gilmore Young Artist and the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Clayton gave a beautiful performance and stayed well after the concert to engage with students and members of the Milton community. Click here to watch the recording of the concert.
